Well worth your time. All this nitpicking with tactics is, in the end, futile, and this is from a tactics nerd. It's not the X's and O's; it's the Jimmies and Joes.

To become a major force in world football, the United States don't need more intelligent tactics from Klinsmann but simply better players

Completely agree with his argument. Hopefully we will see our players get the recognition and chances to play in Europe, because if we are going to rely on MLS we will continue to be the same old American team that wins on heart and effort rather than true talent.

He's basically stating the obvious. Not a lot to take away from this article, honestly. I hate to say it but while improved tactics may have gotten us past Belgium, in the end we won't compete with the elites on a consistent basis until our player development catches up.

And that takes a long time because it starts at the youth level. Does America have enough patience for this? Probably not.

They talked about this on World Cup Tonight after our loss and how Belgium 12 years ago put their plan into place and are now reaping the benefits. We face different challenges than Belgium with the size of our country and getting everyone on the same page with training/tactics/etc., but we do have a larger player pool to pull from. However with that also comes the challenges of scouting a nation of our size

While we didn't have our best game.. What tactical changes would have gotten us by Belgium

Zonal Marking

I hate it and just leads to a bunch of finger pointing esp on set pieces

Using it can work if you keep your defensive shape but you better damn well have a striker up top willing to ball chase/press to force a mistakes.
