I've heard and seen this, and Jurgen just said it on Facebook.

Yes it wouldn't have counted even if he hadn't muffed it.

What broadcast were you watching? ESPN made it pretty clear that they thought the goal wouldn't have counted, but later corrected themselves to say that they misconstrued the linesman's goal kick signal as an offsides call. But the FIFA official match statistics indicate 0 offsides.

They said the flag was up, on ESPN's broadcast.

I cannot imagine the melt if he had made it, was onside, but was called offside. Would've been epic.

Fricking Wondo. You basically have one job and one job only - poach a goal. And you blew it.

Let's put this to rest please...

He wasn't fricking offsides.
The question isn't whether he was offside (no S), but whether he was called offside.

Ok I missed that part too. I heard them going on for awhile about the ref indicating that he would have been offsides, but he clearly was not. It makes sense that they misinterpreted the call. Either way it was a terrible shank. He has to make that goal.

Several players said the flag was up.

A FIFA media fact sheet stated the U.S. had not been called offside once during the game, though that statistic has no official standing and is not ratified by the referee, his assistants or any match official.

Darke immediately said the flag was up but then a moment later corrected himself and said it wasn't up for offsides but that the linesman was just signalling goal kick.

This is consistent with the match stats that show no offsides.

This. But in any event I don't think Wondo knew the flag was up before he sent the ball into the stands

We wouldn't know exactly what the call was unless the linesman was asked himself.

The match stats are not always consistent with referee intent.

Both Ives and Wahl said the flag went up for offside. Because the keeper didn't touch the ball and it went out, I think the ref just gave a goal kick instead of calling offside.

This. It's pretty easy to distinguish between offsides and goal kick. Since Wondo shite himself the ref just allowed the goal kick. That's easier than getting the placement right for offside.

How so? The announcers said the AR raised his flag. If he was signaling that Wondo was off, the following signal is the same as for a goal kick. The placement of the ball would even be similar.
