subjective pay for service, compensation should be a part of normal compensation...like the Chef/cooks

1. discriminatory/perpetuates racism and sexism- both servers and patrons use non-work related judgmental bias when evaluating tip or service level(guy tips boobs over service, waiter doesn't go out of the way to help a minority)

2. tax avoidance- staff doesn't declare tips to not pay taxes

3. delays transactions-no more cash, card entries have to be run twice, ID theft and other fraudulently inflated charges

4. Better service doesn't actually beget better tips - one guy orders a $20 bottle of wine, the other orders a $80 bottle of wine....mediocre service of 10% of $80=$8, great service 25% of $20=$4...based on client order, not standard of service

higher end restaurants pay more to get better servers...fire ones people complain about.

Well this is false.

I tip extremely well for great service. Better service still earns more money regardless of price of items purchased.

Tipping on price for premium bottles of wine or cocktails has long pissed me off.

I tip well, usually. But I'm not tipping five dollars for a nineteen dollar Martini, or twenty for an eighty dollar bottle. Dumb.

I don't mind tips, but the tips do keep me away from getting wine in a restaurant. I don't think I should have to tip 20% on a $100 bottle of wine if the same service goes into a $20 bottle of wine. That said, restaurants go by percent of sales, so if a server has $1000 in wine sales, then she is expected to tip out 3% to backs and bartenders, if she only made 2-5% of that thousand then she would lose money after taxes.

enjoy barely being able to eat out. restaurant costs for everywhere would skyrocket if they had to pay their workers different than what they do now.

Service already sucks balls at those places where tipping isn't expected. Expect that to be the norm.
