Should the USA make an all out effort to be great at soccer?

Just that a great country like the USA is outplayed by the rest of the world makes the USA look bad on the world stage. It is the sport that the rest of the world judges a country by. If we took up the challenge, sort of like we did when Russia got into outer space before us, and made a country wide commitment to winning the world cup in 2022, I think it could be done. We need to recognize the talent at an early age and channel them into special soccer acadamies. Bring in the world greatest coaches. Develop a thriving minor league to go along with MLS so that young athletes could turn pro at an early age and dedicate themselves to this sport. Spend the money needed to bring in the top talent into the MLS so that it is as competitive as any European league so that our players are playing at the highest level league in our own country. It would be expensive and need to be backed with funding from government grants and backed by large corperations. Right now it just doesn't appear that America has the backbone to do what needs to be done. Our team played with great effort and there is much to be proud of but it is obvious that we still have a long way to go to be recognized as one of the great countries of the world. We think of ourselves as being an elite country with our American football and basketball, but to the rest of the world, that doesn't mean anything.

Soccer is growing steadily, and we'll be more and more competitive each year on the international level.
As far as an "all out effort" think about Lebron, Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, etc growing up playing soccer and going to year round soccer academies. THis is what it will take. In every other country all the best athletes grow up playing soccer and are trained in academies. Our elite athletes still more often than not choose football and basketball at an early age, but soccer is gaining.
As far as an "all out effort" think about Lebron, Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, etc growing up playing soccer and going to year round soccer academies. THis is what it will take. In every other country all the best athletes grow up playing soccer and are trained in academies. Our elite athletes still more often than not choose football and basketball at an early age, but soccer is gaining.

that's the attitude that is the problem. There seems to be no sense of urgency. When Russia got into outer space before we did, we changed our whole school system, spent billions of dollars, and made it to the moon in a short time span.

We dominate the winter and summer olympics. We own basketball globally. Have the best baseball league in the world. We can't be awesome at everything.

The rest of the world judges each other by soccer maybe, but not the US. It was a nice run, but it's not going to happen overnight in America.

So you want us to guess which one of our kids will be the next Lebron, then force him to only play soccer, just so the US could maybe go further in the World Cup?

Plus, Russia and East Germany tried to revamp government systems and become sports superpowers...not a good idea to trek down that road.

the kind of athletes you named wouldn't help a bit. It take a totally different type of athlete for soccer. We have the type of athletes needed for soccer in this country right now, they just aren't getting the proper training and backing. Football and basketball athletes does not necessarily equate to soccer athletes. Soccer is a more finesse sport that takes a more cerebral athlete along with many other traits that aren't found among very many NFL or NBA players. Different sports take different types of athletes.

Stupid response. Its not about forcing any kid to do anything or guessing who will be great. Its about those type athletes wanting to play soccer over football or basketball. Long way to go but soccer is in the conversation with kids now.
In Germany every pro soccer team is required to run an academy to develop soccer talent. These kids battle each other year round to become elite soccer players with hope of going pro one day, not to college. We don't have anything like that kind of a system here.

There is urgency but it still takes time. We are starting to get the pieces in place that we need, just going to take time.
We had a great showing this year. Escaped the group of death and went toe-to-toe with Germany and Belgium which are two respective teams.
