When a player declares to play for a certain national team, for instance this Julian green kid could've played for either the US or Germany I assume, does that mean they are with that national team for the entirety of their international soccer career? Or, can he go play for another team in the future?

Cool. That's what I thought but wanted to make sure.

Also, what are the qualifications for being able to play for a national team? Born there, obviously, but is it citizenship, length of time, ect.

BTW, Howard played unbelievably today. I also think Beasley's play today has been undervalued on this board tonight. Just an observation.

Yeah Beasley had an incredible game.

You need to be able to gain citizenship of a country to play for them. All the German Americans were born on army bases to American fathers, that's why they were eligible.

Citizenship is the only requirement. Some countries are notoriously easy to get citizenship in (Eastern Europe, Middle,East), while others are much harder (France, Germany, England).

I'd say the US is in the middle, closer to the hard countries. We don't do special favors (ask Khalid Khanouchi about that ), but if you're born here, you are a citizen. That's why it was so easy for Green and Johannsson.

Ah. Ok. Forgot about the military bases in other countries.

Beasley was a bad arse today. We're gonna miss him in Russia.

One more question, Has this Gedion zelalem guy already played for the US team? After reading his name on this board tonight I went and did some research and watched some videos and that kid is legit.

He is supposedly in the process of getting his American citizenship.

He's trying to gain citizenship. Hope he can get that soon and we can try to woo him. He should end up being a good player.

I think the citizenship is the only burden.

He's playing on an Arsenal team with a bunch of Germans. I don't know if he's good enough for Germany to make a pitch to him this young though.

I think it was very telling when he withdrew with that U-17 tournament with Germany which, for some reason, would've cap-tied him.

Also, if you have one grandparent who is a citizen of a country, you can play for that country.

Only if you are a citizen of the country that you switch to at the time. Gid isn't an American citizen yet, so playing for Germany's U17 would make him unavailable to play for the US.

His situation is way more complex than Greens. Green played for Germany's youth teams but was able to switch to the US because he was a US citizen.

You can only switch to the countries that you are a citizen of. Gid could play for Germany and switch to Nigeria if he wanted to because he's already citizen there. But not to the US because he is not a US citizen.... Yet.

Declining to play for Germany's U17 was huge.

And in regards to Gid obtaining his US citizenship... He and his father were in DC in May finalizing everything. That's also another snag with Gid... His parents aren't US citizens, despite living here for an extended period of time. So, since he is 17years old and a minor, his Dad or Mom needs to become a citizen. And once that happens, Gid becomes a citizen due to some act that says any child or adopted child of US citizen parents will be a full US citizen. And they were in DC in May finalizing the process. So it shouldn't be long now

Edit: that's confusing... Just read this LINK

He is.

He just turned 17 in January. A week later, he made his 1st appearance for Arsenal's top squad in an FA Cup game. Then he signed his 1st pro contract.

At 16 he was playing for Arsenals U21 team with the likes of Ox and Walcott... And he was already 1 of their top players. He also dressed for Arsenal at 16 and was available as a substitute, but was not used.

People have said "he can dribble like Iniesta and pass like Xavi." And "If Zelalem is half the player many predict he will be, Wenger is a very lucky man. Special players as good as Zelalem come around only a few times in a generation. " He's also compared to Zidane.

Arsenal has said he's their most promising player since Cesc Fabregas, and is ahead of him at this age. Jack Wilshere has said training against him is a nightmare. He was playing in a trial and after a few minutes of play Wenger told Geds dad that "your son will play for Arsenal." And that was it.

Julian Green is the big name right now when it comes to the US team, and rightly so, but Gedion Zelalem could be even better.
