DICKINSON, N.D. — As policymakers in Washington, D.C., debate raising the federal minimum wage, entry-level workers in North Dakota enjoy pay levels nearly twice the current federal minimum.

“Effectively, our minimum wage in town is $14 an hour,” claims Shawn Kessel, administrator for the City of Dickinson, a community in North Dakota’s booming oil fields.

Neither North Dakota nor the City of Dickinson have a minimum wage policy.

tl;dr - go where the jobs are.

Or Midland/Odessa Texas, they are paying about the same. Saw a sign at McDonalds starting 10-14 per hour just this weekend.

I wonder how those wages are in comparison to the cost of living.

You will also have to rent a hotel room (if available) as housing supply is nowhere near demand.

Damn I wouldn't mind going up there for a year or two and making bank. I've heard though that living costs are high too so it's probably all relative

So when the economy is booming, pay increases? Hell of a concept. Are women allowed up there, with the war on them and all?

I've heard the cost of living is pretty high as well, but checking some of the cost-of-living comparison sites doesn't bring up anything out of the ordinary when comparing to Baton Rouge.

For a starting wage at those levels, if I were fresh out of college and/or a low-skilled worker I would let ND suck my balls until my dead ancestors came.

I would also be looking to invest like a mofo in real estate. In a boom like that:

1. Buy land
2. Build apartments
3. Profit

Edit: Average rent in Williston for one bedroom in a house or condo is $1000/month. Low end is $800. Lowest minimum wage in town was $9.40 at Game stop. Wal-Mart's night shift starts at $19.

My first week working on Frac sites I worked 110 hours, made $2700 before taxes, and it never got above -5 on a single shift. Luckily my job was easy and out of a 18 hr shift I only spent about 6 out of the truck.

You realize this is like moving to San Francisco, getting paid more than you used to make, claiming you've got a ton of money, then realizing you owe your landlord $3000/month for your shitty studio apartment, right?

One of the hottest women I know lives in ND. I also saw way more hot women than I ever expected up there on Frac sites. They all had cushy, warm jobs on site though. One chick had a LSU sticker on her truck.

I think it's more akin to moving out there as the Gold Rush was starting. Prices on places to live will come down once competition increases.

Not going to happen until they can 100% prove this is a long-term investment. Williston and Dickinson got screwed in the 70s because they built a ton of infrastructure and then they got stuck with it when the boom died. Now the city councils are being very slow about approving new non temporary major housing projects.

How does the county feel about it? Couldn't someone just toss something up right outside the city limits?
