How do I get rid of crabgrass in my lawn?
Posted by DanTiger on 7/1/14 at 10:11 am00
I have a St. Aug lawn and it is beautiful and thick except for many small pockets of crabgrass. I have killed all of the dollar weed I had but nothing seems to kill this damn crab grass. Is the only option to dig up the crab grass?

Go get 24D from Tractor Supply, spray the area. It won't kill your St. Aug but should kill the crabgrass
2,4-d will kill St. Aug and crabgrass as far as I know. I don't want to take a chance on wiping out my lawn.

Bermuda can't even tell when it gets showered with 2,4-D.

Very good to know...

2,4-D is selective to broadleaves. Bermuda has about the narrowest leaf of all the grasses, therefore is extremely resistant. Early spring my Bermuda gets a heavy dose of Trimec, and it doesn't even affect the color of the grass.

I pulled a ton of it, then acutely spot treated with roundup. It burned small holes in all the grass about the size of a salad plate, but the St. Augustine quickly (about 2 months)ran back over the burned spots and filled in.

This sounds like an inventive idea. Did you leave some of the crabgrass to absorb the Roundup or did you pull it up completely? If there is no green I know the roundup won't work on the roots.
ive been wanting to ask this too, except my lawn is centipede
i was thinking about spot treating with roundup as well, but it does leave some really bare areas
since its absorbed into the leaves, i've heard of people applying it directly to the plant with a paint brush or glove, etc...but that seems a bit too labor intensive

I think I would just dig it all up if I was going to go to that extent. The upsetting thing is that it is not visible at all right after mowing but it grows so much faster thn the St. Aug it looks like crap 2 days afterwards.
I had some success with Atrazine but you have to be careful, too much and it will damage the St. Augustine. Hot weather may make this worse if I remember correctly. And it didn't kill off the crab grass though it knocked it back pretty well. My lawn is very small so after the Atrazine I hand weeded. The crab grass still comes back a bit but it I keep on top of it and it doesn't take long to pull it out.
