Mets could have paid him $5.9 mil in 2000 to release him or pay him 30 mil over 25 years deferred for 10 years

1 mil/year is probably pretty easy for the Mets to afford, but still seems a bit silly

Bobby can thank Bernie Madoff

Bobby Bonilla got a check for $1,193,248.20 today, just as he will every July 1 through 2035

At some point I quit being envious of an overpaid athlete and just cheer for them.

Keep gettin' them checks Bobby!

I remember reading the same thing. It was also pointed out that even if the Mets decided to invest the $5.9 million, they would have made more than the payout they are giving Bonilla

mets owner was knee deep in Bernie Madoff's investments

they used to defer monies for player salaries and "invest" them to generate more money.

they thought they could make more on the $5.9 million over the life of the new terms....but of course, ponzi scheme and all

but again defering the money and investing it makes it not a bad contract. especially not the type contract most people seem to think it is.

it makes it a horrible contract now

at the time the owner agreed, he was under the impression that all his investments with Madoff were making him tons of money...but that turned out not to be the case

so as it stands now it's a horrible contract

I cranked out the math one time and it came out to ~10% or so interest. Not too shabby.

I remember reading something about Bonilla's contract and the way several baseball teams were run back then, and you wouldn't believe the guys still on their payrolls. Marquis Grissom was still receiving deferred paychecks from the Dodgers during the McCourt fiasco, even though it'd been 10 years since he'd played for them and 2005 since he'd played baseball at all.

Ok sure but we both know when people claim it to be the worst contact ever that's now the point they're making.
