What I learned today

The oil capacity of my truck exceeds that of my oil pan--considerably.

Tomorrow I will learn whether a 15 degree nozzle on a 4k psi washer can remove oil stains.

Also I learned that the oil filter placement on a 5.4 Ford motor was chosen by either service managers to deter self maintenance, or by satan, in order to steal my soul.

At this point, both may have been successful.

Once the 5 minute oil change facilities started popping up that allow the driver to stay in his or her vehicle coupled with the price of a quart of oil these days, self oil changes are extinct in my world. The comfort of changing my own oil is offset by the digital database in both vehicles that would tell me immediately upon leaving a facility if there was an issue.

Plus, I'd have episodes such as yours each and every time if I did it myself.

I agree. That's why it's the first time I've changed it n this truck in 3 years. Changing the oil in the 4wheeler and got a wild hair (it was time to change it in the truck too).

But,I'll burn that motor up before I do that again.

Just out of reach from the top and blocked from the bottom. I did it once when I had a 5.4L and that was all it took for me to figure that one out.

Yup...your soul is gone. Mine was gone when I changed the spark plugs on my old 5.4. What a sunnuvabitch.

on my son's first little pickup truck - I wanted to make sure he knew how to change the oil, check tires for correct wear, change the air filter, etc. Spilling the oil after draining the truck and making a mess etc. He asked if would could just pay someone to do that for us.

It's not gonna make any difference what degree orifice you use on the PW. Hot water & chemicals will be your best bet. Then lay 12% pool chlorine to it and let the sun and bleach work its wonders.

Rookie move
More of a hard headed move. I knew how many quarts my truck holds.

Of course, If I used a kiddie pool when changing the oil in my mower, I'd still end up with some on the driveway.

It's a matter of whether it looks like a map of Hawaii, or (in this instance) Australia--to scale.

What year 5.4? I'm guessing you saw firsthand that it holds 7 quarts?...

I have an '06 and the filter wrench that attaches to my ratchet driver makes the job much easier.

That does look convenient. I used a really long screwdriver and a hammer.

Changing the oil in my power stroke the first time with a standard oil drain pan that wouldn't hold 3.75 GALLONS of burning hot oil was a great lesson in stupidity
