I loathe poor quality and needing repair on things I can't do myself. So other than cleaning the coils yearly, what is a good brand that will need the least maintenance? I've heard Whirlpool is the best but they don't use universal parts and they can be hard to come by.

LG home appliances are always snazzy looking.

ETA: Don't know about reliability, though.

I have the LG that is currently on the commercials. French Door and all. It is an amazing refrigerator. It's so huge! We got ours on sale last year at 2200 after wheelin' and dealin'. I think it's around 31.2 cubic feet.

It also has an air filter for the refrigerator.

I have had an LG since 2007. The ice maker has broken a couple of times. The first was covered under warranty and I figured out how to fix it the other time. Otherwise, it has been good. One suggestion, pick one that has a ice/water dispenser you can fit a large glass/cup/pitcher under.

I like my Samsung I just bought. It has 2 fans, so if the freezer or fridge goes out, the other one doesn't. Most fridges have one fan. If it goes out, your entire unit goes out. Samsung is the only one I know of that uses this technology.

The only complaint I have is the ice maker. It gives me crush iced most of the time when I want cubed.

The GE repair man that came look at mine told me to buy a Samsung

I did and I like it so far but it's too new for me to call it reliable

The GE was not reliable

Someone send up a bat signal for that Napoleon guy. Meanwhile, here's a thread I bookmarked on just this subject in which he opined:

Nope. I purchased an entire new set of microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator (no d). Spent $5200 on the whole set. In one month, I sent back the entire mess. The Dishwasher stopped entirely. The refrigerator filter clogged up in less than a month. Had to spend $40 on a new one, and oh... guess what? In order to replace the filter, you have to unplug the refrigerator. I contacted Samsung about this. Their reply:

quote:

"Oh, that? That's a feature. It keeps you from having water spray into the refrigerator."
How is THAT a feature? If I'm not there my wife has to pull out this heavy-assed refrigerator, climb in behind it and unplug it, push it back, remove and replace the filter, pull it back out, climb back in behind it and plug it in, then climb back out, and push it back into the space. Bull fricking shite!

Replaced it all with comparable LG. Not one-single issue.

All brands will have their issues. I just purchased as well and what I gathered while researching is that

a. LED displays will be a huge pain in the arse at some point in the (probably near) future.

b. Bottom Freezer styles tend to break more often than your standard top freezer models. (I didn't look st the side by side models, so I'm not sure of their reliability compared to what i just mentioned).

c. Ice machines tend to be a problem with refrigerators across the board.

Do not buy a GE or a Kitchen Aid fridge, all the 2014 models have been having control failure. It's under warranty this year, next year it won't be.

A kitchen-aide built in fridge's control board costs over $1300. (most expensive single appliance part I know of)

I have a 590 Subzero. Last of the timer controlled models. Uses $30 more electricity a year on average, but is controlled by a $10 timer. Instead of a $400 board like the 600 - 800 series.

Right now I like electrolux/Frigidaire, LG, Samsung (except the french doors and their defrost bug issues) and Amana/Maytag.

No one uses universal parts.
Now there are some universal fans, but they really don't fit everything and of course universal relays fit all compressors and universal defrost terminators fit all fridges as well.

As a rule of thumb FSP (Whirlpool's parts company) is the cheapest OEM parts company but even better Whirlpool units can use ERP and Supco parts and those save you tons of money. But whirlpool puts more into it's Kenmore and Amana units. Whirlpool itself is becoming more like Roper.

Also, if you want the longest lasting of any appliance, buy the cheapest unit you can get. last decade's tech was way simpler than what we have now and is easy and cheap to fix.
You want a timer controlled fridge.

Unless you have TWO COMPRESSORS, (like high end units do) two fans don't mean much, the freezer makes all the cold air, it's warmer air is blown into the fridge.
If that one fan fails you more than likely have a defrost failure and you aren't getting circulation anyway.

Now some samsungs have dual evaporators and those are really cool. One compressor but two cooling outputs.

whenever I get a call that a Whirlpool isn't cooling it's usually a $20(my price I charge more of course) heater or $15 defrost terminator, when a GE has the same issue IT'S ALWAYS A $150 Control board.

a. truth and costly to replace

b. yes, harder to service as well

c. yes, but the Whirlpool modular icemaker is almost bulletproof and the entire assembly cost's less than $50 online. Viking and Subzero use it too.

I've spoken to you about my GE before

It's a sealed system issue and it's sitting in my garage taking up space at the moment until I figure out what to do with it
