So apparently Arjen Robben admitted to flopping yesterday, certainly not his first time. Yet he will probably walk away from it unpunished, sadly.

IMO flopping is a disgraceful act. At minimum, a player caught flopping during a game should receive a straight red on the spot. Especially if it's in the box.

FIFA should go back and review potential flops after the game is over, and any player determined to have flopped should be given a 1 game suspension.

Can you imagine if basketball or hockey employed that rule? They would never have enough players to finish a game.

Until there is a legitimate penalty for flopping I cant see it as anything more than taking advantage of the rules.

This is on FIFA to me for allowing these types of things to happen.

el oh el

straight ejection for flopping???
that would make the situation worse as no ref would ever have the balls to call it.

Soccer players flop at least as much as Basketball and Hockey players. Seriously if you ejected everyone who flopped you would finish every game like 3 on 3.

They should award penalties the other way when caught flopping, and if it gets excessive give out yellow cards. FIFA should also review and fine players for flopping, like basketball

Pretty much.

Some of you are naive about how the sport works. FIFA is just the association of football associations. It is the sum representative of a massive group of interests that rarely align. For this rule to be enforced, you need a definable, tangible rule for what a flop is. So now you need to agree on what constitutes a flop and differentiate it from a dive, and then address the concerns of the individual FA's, and then take it to the IFAB. It would be a difficult task to say the least.

Add to that, a dive is already penalized with a yellow card if seen.

Let's say that Marquez steps on Robben's foot, Robben goes down, but the penalty is not called. There is obvious contact, but embellishment. Is the ref supposed to give a yellow on the embellishment? How would you codify that in the rules? Is there supposed to be an "Lemon Test" for flopping?

If they hand out suspensions, the "flop" would have to fit very specific criteria. Make it as objective as possible.

The punishment for a flop is already a yellow card. In the NBA, it's a technical. Two yellows = red. Two technicals = ejection. I wouldn't mind retroactive yellows though.

I don't see how it can adequately handled 100% in-game. Everything happens too fast, and without slow-mo instant replay its often hard to tell if legitimate contact was made prior to a player going down. I think there should be an official review after each match, with severe fines (based on % of of the player's salary for that game, so that big money guys can't just laugh it off) and suspensions handed out for cases where there is indisputable video evidence that a player simulated injury (rolled around like he was shot, or grabbed his ankle and howled in pain like it was broken) when no contact was actually made. Duration of suspension and size of fine should increase for repeat offenders - something along the lines one half ban & 50% of the weeks salary for 1st offense, a couple games and 100% of entire weeks salary for the next, and so on.

This would obviously need to coincide with a push to actually enforce the rule (at least, I think it's already a FIFA rule) where players are not supposed to run screaming to the ref to lobby for a card/foul.

There is significantly more flopping in basketball. It's not close.

Hockey and Soccer are comprable.

If the flop is flagrant, a fine or loss of playing time needs to be enforced.

I definitely disagree with this. Maybe more as in quantity bc there are more opportunities to flop. But in soccer pretty much anytime they can flop they do flop

Refs should just give yellows like they are supposed to. That would fix a lot of this.

Seriously? God you are so fricking stupid. Please take your crappy posts, ideas, and your complete misunderstanding of the game to another board.

An obvious flop is already punishable with a yellow card. On the Robben play yesterday, there was contact...which by the context of the rules, can result in a direct kick and a pk if it's in the box. It was a legit foul.
