1st... thank you to those who gave me advice on cleaning the weeds/junk out of the grass. It worked perfectly and I have a beautiful, thick yard now.

2nd... is there ANYTHING i can do to slow the rate of growth? I find myself mowing twice a week to stay ahead of it. If I went a full week I would have to raise the wheels and cut twice.

thanks in advance (first world problems)

What advice did you use to clean the weeds and junk out of your grass?

Im in the same boat. Grass is growing 2x as fast as last year. I mow 3/4 with self propelled push... but Im not going to be able to keep that up the entire summer.

I've always said that a well fertilized yard needs to be cut every 4-5 days.

The fertilizer you put should be playing out and it will slow down. You may want to come back with a lighter top-dressing to keep it going somewhat. If you let go now you risk broad leaves competing.

If you've got the weeds under control and are no longer spraying heavily, switch to a slow-release fertilizer. There are growth retardants on the market. I use Solace (Trinexapac-ethyl), a product from Regal Chemical Co. Quite pricey, but I can go from mowing every other day down to once every 7-10 days after an application.

Just let it grow and cut it when you have time. Don't lose sleep about grass.

I have a nice home with a decent sized yard in Louisiana (south central) and I have some issues with my grass (st aug) Ive been asking around a little and thinking about whats best for the future (type of grass).

Scott's guy was spraying a neighbor the other day, so I asked him to come by and give an opinion. He is gonna come aerate it next week and after that he would like to see me get all spots level with a high grade topsoil spread in any areas with undulation and then spread Bermuda seed all over. He said the Bermuda would overtake the St Aug eventually and when it did so well enough, he would start a process of getting rid of the st aug. completely leaving me with a nice plush Bermuda lawn. Said process will take better part of a year (obviously)

My question.....What is the best type of grass all around to have in my front yard in this part of the country? Of course, I want it green and nice year round. I have 4 kids and neighborhood is full of kids. I have dogs, but they are relegated to the backyard only, and I plan on leaving the backyard as is with St Aug...it's reasonably health and out of sight to public.

For front yard, Is Bermuda the best?

Thanks for any input by anyone

IMHO - deal with it for the immediate future.

I wouldn't use any type of retardant on there, all it would take is one minor drought after applying that during the summer heat and you could have a dead grass problem.

Consider it a blessing everything worked and continue to cut. As one poster already stated, don't lose sleep over it...it's just recreational lawn grass.

Also, there's two things that make grass grow: rain and sun.

For my neck of the woods in SELA:
June '13 rain 0.64"
June '14 rain 2.6"

Still wondering why it's growing more?

Cover it with a tarp for one week.

We've had 14.5" this month in Lake Charles. My yard turned into a rain forest temporarily.

my yard is a mix of bermuda and zoysia. The Zoysia ia slowly taking over and where the bermuda looks really good the zoysia looks great. I really need to mow my yard as well but the 7-8 inches of rain that we got just Saturday and Sunday morning have delayed that a little.
