This might not get much responses since everyone claims to be swimming in money but I was wondering if anyone has every used Couchsurfing.org.

quote:

Couchsurfing International Inc. is a hospitality exchange and social networking website. The website provides a platform for members to "surf" on couches by staying as a guest at a host's home, host travelers, or join an event.
Couchsurfing International Inc refers to two separate legal entities. The first was founded in 2003 as a non-profit organization, and was liquidated in 2011. Its assets were sold to the private for-profit corporation Better World Through Travel, later renamed Couchsurfing International, Inc., which defines itself as “a mission-driven for-profit corporation”. As of August 2012, the company has raised $22.6 million in investment capital, while reporting no revenue.

I've looked as some of it and most of it is people from out of the country that are traveling the states and looking for a cheap place to stay. Given that you don't get shanked in your sleep or your house gets cleaned out, it seems like it could be a pretty cool thing to do.

Has anyone here ever couchsurf'd or had a couchsurfer stay at your house? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Also, here's a map for those who don't like to read and prefer to just scan the pictures:

From what I have read, the documented (documented being the key word) rapes are not as frequent as you would think, especially not in the States. Although I did read an article about a "traveling rapist" in Europe.

My cousin in NO is a bit of a hippie/free spirit and has done Couchsurfing several times. She thinks its great and has made a lot of friends along the way. Not for me, but apparently it works.

I seriously thought this thread was going to be about hitching a couch to the back of a truck or 4-wheeler and riding it around a field

My idiot stoner friends in high school did it once. I can't believe none of them died

I've done it least 20 times. Only two bad/awkward experiences, the rest at least pleasant, a few great. I even keep on touch with a few of the people I've stayed with. You have to be careful and make sure that you're not staying with hippies or gutterpunks, though, but that's easy through profile browsing.

It seems like it wouldn't be that bad because of this. It's not like you're just going in blind

I have friends who've hosted Couchsurfers. They are a married couple with 3 children and have never had a bad experience. They enjoy meeting people from different walks of life.

I couldn't see doing it myself, though. The thought of allowing a stranger to sleep in my home seems too risky to me and my family. All it takes is ONE bad couchsurfer to cause huge potential problems. The risk is not worth the reward, in my opinion.

I had a good friend who always hosted couchsurfers. We met a bunch of cool people from all over the world that way. I've never hosted because my girlfriend wouldn't go for that in our house, but I like the concept.

My friend in Boulder does that and has had some pretty good experiences and met cool people. I signed up the other day but haven't used it yet.

I have been renting a spare bedroom out to people via airbnb for $60 a night. Met some cool people and put some extra cash in my pocket so I like it

ETA: Have two girls from SF checking in today for 4 days, and one is smoking hot
