This show will not even delve into the mystery of what happened

I just read an interview where the director said it's not about that
This will be pure character driven drivel. They're going to set up everything around this outlandish and mysterious event and then ignore it save for the "how people are dealing with it" aspect

I've watched one episode and I'm out. I suggest others to do the same. This show won't even make it past season 2 if it gets that far (the source material is pretty slim)

Really disappointing outing by HBO

I just started watching. This shite is wack. What the frick? What are these all white bitches that can't fricking talk? Cult shite. About 15 minutes in, I'm not feeling this. When you're talking about a slow-build TV show, you can't do a stupid cold open like this. You're going to alienate your audience. Everyone is lost, but not in a positive way. Not in an "I want to know more" fashion." Honestly the only reason I haven't killed it is because HBO. They've made some solid stuff.

I'm pretty sure Buddy Garrity is the senator. Weird. He's Buddy.

ETA: When I say everyone is lost, I mean all the viewers. It's one thing if you give a solid build, then make some crazy shite happen. But Nobody wants to just watch the ramifications of an unexplained event. It's a shite in the face of human curiosity, a defining characteristic, of, you know, being a rational, thinking person.

I don't understand how people keep saying in this thread they are lost or confused about what is happening. I think it's pretty damn obvious. Is it weird and abnormal? Yeah. But how are you "lost"? There is nothing that happens in either episode that should be confusing or cause you to be lost.

well...

-what is the deal/foundation of the "white" cult?
-whose prophecy/vision is correct? the white cult? johnson's cult? the cop's guardian angel? the preacher (and what teh frick is up with him...guess we find out 23.5% of his story tomorrow)? is the looney tunes dad insane or a messenger?
-what led liv tyler to go from a normal life/engagement to cult in one night?

-DID THEY FIX THE BAGEL MACHINE!?!?!!?

She never directly addressed the bald guy. She just asked if the beer was for her and her friend; Chief could have been holding it himself and she really took it from him, he just imagined she took it from bald dude. She also didn't ask who the bald guy was until she had left the room and heard Chief talking from the other room; he could have been talking to himself at the front door and she came back to ask who was that at the door since he was alone when she saw him

Wow. I tried beginning the second episode and I cared so little. Now I know why.

Hollywood Prospectus had a pretty good analysis of the show, take a listen. Your boy Andy Greenwald was pretty much on point on this one IMO.

apparently that is what the book is about as well

I'm all for strong characters, but you can't just fricking not engage our interest in the why the frick did so many people randomly disappear aspect of the show...If I want to watch a show about survivor guilt, the big event in question should be pretty clear from the get go

I don't really care to know how or why they disappeared. That, to me, is not important.

The other "mysteries" they have set up should be answered in some way, but how they disappeared? Not a big deal IMO.

here is the big issue (in response to my joke post above): if this is character-driven, you don't need all the bullshite. the EVENT itself? OK fine...creating a conflict that is so absurd that you can explore how normal people would react? I'll accept it

but if you add all the extra bullshite, then you're taking away from the characters and trying to spark interest elsewhere. this goes beyond all of the unanswered (non-event) issues (like the white cult). the jarring, disjointed nature of the narrative structure (which admittedly was much better in episode 2) detracts from the characters (to focus on the mystery). creating the crazy/not-crazy and prophetic issues? these incidents detract from the characters (to focus on the supernatural)

it's like having 2 QBs. if you have 2 QBs, you don't have a QB

not to mention the most unrealistic part of the show is that people are not even interested in figuring it out. This show is not even human. We would tirelessly wonder, investigate, search for answers. We would never stop...the people in this show are like mr kruger on Seinfeld "whatever"

I really hope the numbers kill this show because HBO has replaced Bored to Death with the fatty fantastic nudey hipster show and now they are banking on this crap to be their summer heavy hitter? They're lineup isn't looking good. The True Detective creator already sounds burned out and Game of Thrones is about to come to a halt because they're going to run out of source material

so needless to say, I was hoping for a better show than "the leftovers"

well they set this show so far removed from the event AND set it in a small town, for a reason

i'd imagine there will be some cathartic releases regarding the issues of the event (some of which you described above). that's likely going to be a backbone of every thing that every character does, along with other issues (like guilt issues about why they did/didn't go, etc)

the first episode they showed an entire panel that had tried to do a study on what happened...

The event is just too outlandish to go ahead and dismiss. I don't need to know what happened, or any explanation, but I certainly want the characters to be a little more fricking interested.

Instead they're just all angry because they don't have answers, but they don't really seem to be looking or discussing it...the whole series can be summarized when the wolverine look alike chief tells the chick at the bar

"we're here"

Everything in the world the characters are reacting to is a result of this event, why not just make it a catastrophic earth quake or something. If the event isn't important then why make is such a mystery?

the event is important and them not knowing how or why is the driving factor for the events that are taking place currently

millions disappear in an instant in a global event with not the least bit of fricking explanation, we'd still be obsessively looking 100 years later, a panel would never cut it. Again, I don't want the explanation, but I want the characters to care more...I want something put forth to at least spark my imagination and I have a shred of something to theorize on.

I will say that HBO probably shouldn't have marketed the whole thing around "the event" because viewers are tuning in expecting a mystery and as soon as they realize they're not getting what they thought, they're going to start changing the channel quickly.

them not knowing just explains the pessimistic post apocalyptic like things...this show is about a family and the new relationships they form...Again, I like character driven stuff, but not when a mystery is what is being advertised or I can't ignore the mystery that the show is ignoring. People naturally want to know why or want to investigate, and this show has not and will not satiate the viewers appetite in this regard

I hope you don't like it too much because while excellently made, this one won't last. Usually that happens when you dupe your audience...oh, probably don't play up the "creator of lost" aspect when you're supposed to be downplaying the expectations for what the show is about.
