Question about Shameless Season 4 - SPOILERS

I'm catching up on Shameless, really enjoy this show.
But in the season 3 finale Lip gets accepted to MIT and it seems like he was likely to take the full ride, but in season 4 he's busing dishes for a scholly at Chicago Polytech.
What gives? Did I miss an explanation?

No explanation but MIT's probably super recognizable and expensive to film in. So it would be really obvious if they were faking it with a local college standing in for "MIT". Writers probably wanted to keep him local as well so it was believable when he shows up home out of the blue. I would have liked to see the character make it to MIT as well, but if they're writing Lip not being able to hack it in Chicago yet, MIT would poo poo him out in a week.

They never mention why he turned down MIT. The easy assumption is that Chicago Polytechnic is an el train away, whereas Cambridge would've been tougher on the family.

Yeah him struggling in college threw me off a little, I thought he was supposed to be some kinda genius with a 4.6 gpa. So they explained that in the convo with jenny from the block that he was trying to hook up with. I just wish that they would have made up something instead of leaving us hanging, Lip is probably my favorite character is why I care.
