Not sure if the Saints should be given that #1 slot, but I am ecstatic to see what this season has in store for us.

Super Bowl bound!

I know right? Saints went from trash to treasure at saftey. Byrd, Vaccaro, and Bush will lock it down at Saftey. Dont forget about Victor Butler who we lost in camp last year. He should add some talent to LB which was the weakest position on D last year. And of course that pass rush the Saints have in Jordan/Hicks/Galette and Lewis/Bailey/Jean-Baptiste at CB should definitley put the Saints D as a top contender. Should we even speak on Brandin Cooks in this offense with Brees/Graham/Stills/Colston and up and coming Khiry Robinson? Man, that deserves its own piece.

I agree that we may not be #1 but I think we will be in contention. We were 4th last year in the first year of a new scheme. Familiarity of the scheme should improve the play of some of the players. I also expect huge jumps from Vacarro and Hicks. We are much deeper a LBer with Butler back and the rookies. That's not even including Byrd upgrading our weakest position last year. I don't assume we will be number 1 but I would not be surprised.

We do not need the #1 defense to win it all - where was the '09 defense ranked?

If the offense jells, a top 10 defense should be enough to win it all.

Well a #1 defense sure wouldn't hurt.

It isn't reasonable to expect 39 takeaways on defense. 3 and outs work pretty well

I think this defense all depends on the health of JARIUS BYRD.

This defense definitely has the personnel and could end up being the #1 D this year, so I don't see why all of you are so surprised at the ranking.

Meh, that's a strong statement. I expect Butler will be in rotation with Galette; him playing more as the base SAM LB and Junior on 3rd and longs or obvious passing plays. After rewatching a lot of the games last season, Galette has a TON of work to do on not over-committing to the pass rush and playing the run.

We'll see how Rooks pans out but he's green and it takes a long time to be a good all-around LB in the NFL. And no I'm not saying that the FO should have done anything differently in regards to LBs this off-season; FA didn't produce any viable options and really I wasn't impressed with many of the LBs in the draft this year. Last year was a good one for LBs, but hindsight is 20/20.

As far as the MLBs, I really hope Lofton and Hawthorne improve as they continue to transition into the 3-4.

Fortt, sorry...

Honestly, the only thing that still concerns me about the defense is the middle linebackers. Lofton and Hawthorne are limited in coverage. Humber is suppose to be better in coverage, but he's height deficient. Who knows how fast Fortt with catch on. Reddick is a downhill player much like Hawthorne.

Agreed Pat. It's the one area that I'm concerned about on D.
