ESPN’s second consecutive year of covering the entire NCAA Division I Baseball Championship – 16 Regional and eight Super Regional sites, and the College World Series – generated significant audience growth over last season, highlighted by the network’s most-viewed College World Series since 2011 and College World Series game since 2009. The coverage also included the third highest-rated baseball telecast, across all cable and broadcast networks, in 2014.

Game 3 of the CWS final is the third highest rated baseball game in 2014, including MLB games on broadcast networks.

52 Million people watched the ESPN's cable broadcast of the NCAA tourney.
By comparison the NHL playoffs had 77 games and averaged 1 million per contest.
The entire slate of MLS regular season games on NBC had 7.2 million (190,000 per event)
25 million people in total watched the Stanley Cup final and 77.5 million in total wathced the NBA finals.

That's just in reference to the games in Omaha, the regionals and superregionals really deal well.

More Than 52 Million People Watch Regionals, Super Regionals and CWS

From that link.

How many teams and games total are there between regional, super regional and CWS? That context is needed before the comparisons to NBA and NHL.

ETA: There are 64 teams in the regional an the tourney is a double elimination format. The comparisons to the NBA and NHL playoffs are not equal in any way.

And he is a moron. Those are only the NBC games. The local broadcasts draw as well and are not included.

These CWS numbers are not as impressive when you start putting some context to them. 64 teams, 149 games....

And the games were only available online. Only 2-3 regionals were on ESPNU.

Just over 52 million people watch at an average 1.23 million per broadcast that would put it at around 42 games broadcasted on ESPN, ESPN2, & ESPNU. That's over 100 games less that what you were thinking, so yes it is really impressive.

From your link.

The networks’ 62 game telecasts averaged 537,000 viewers and a 0.4 US HH rating for increases of six percent (vs. 507,000 viewers) and three percent (vs. 0.3 US HH rating) over 52 game telecasts in 2013.

You are wrong.

My number didn't included(wrongly) the games in Omaha, but you would have to admit that 42 is a lot closer to 62 than 149 is.

Well, the OP was misleading. The CWS didnt do better than the NHL when taking the entire event into context.

Also the 52 million number has to include internet/ESPN 3 viewers, which would include ALL the other games, or else the "math" doesnt add up.

An 0.4 rating is still really bad

That's worse than the Women's NCAA tournament first/second rounds

No it only includes ESPN, ESPN2, & ESPNU, it is poorly writen in the article. The entire NCAA tournament had 52 million viewers on those stations.

Overall, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU combined to televise 62 games over the three rounds, reaching a total of 52,050,000 people, marking a 14 percent increase over the combined 45,517,000 people reached for the 2013 championship

"17 College World Series telecasts averaged 1,123,000 viewers" for a total of 19.1 million people

No man, there are three rounds in the NCAA tounrament? Right? Regional,Super Regional, CWS rignt?

Here they talk about specific ratings. Hard numbers. These are the metrics.

Saying they "reached 52 million viewers" means they are including all forms including internet/apps (which included ALL the games in the 3 rounds). Is pretty clear if you look at it objectively.

Show me where it says anything about the internet or ESPN3. It literally says "Overall, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU combined to televise 62 games over the three rounds, reaching a total of 52,050,000 people." It says nothing about ESPN3 or the internet #s, you are the only person suggesting that it is add in when the article says its not.

The entire tournament had 62 games over 3 rounds on the ESPN network. The final round is the CWS in Omaha, "ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU’s 17 College World Series telecasts averaged 1,123,000 viewers and a 0.7 US HH rating", making it the most-viewed College World Series since 2011.

Just like the Men's NCAA Basketball tournament, they provided the numbers for the entire tournament (52 million) and the numbers from the College World Series (19 million 17 x 1.123mill)
