If the gun laws were not so strict in California people could shoot themselves instead of having to jump off a bridge.

quote:

approved a $76 million funding package for a net system that would prevent people from jumping to their deaths
Talk about well spent tax dollars

Since it opened in 1937, more than 1,400 people have plunged to their deaths, including a record 46 suicides last year, officials said.
I thought California was in favor of assisted suicide.

and when they don't jump from the bridge, they will jump from the building, or in front of the train, huff some CO in the garage or take a razor blade down the stream. Regardless SF is 76 million poorer...

Seems to me they should have done this long ago. But it is California after all.

They could charge for it to make up for the wasted $76 million.

Why, it is just a waste of money. For those that are ready to commit suicide, there is always a way...

Is it just the golden gate? There are other bridges in the bay area.

What a waste of money! Let nature run its course naturally. If some jackass wants to jump by all means let them. Why should we waste hard earned tax dollars to save idiots. There are much greater needs.

After they jump from the bridge to the net couldn't a person climb out of the net and keep falling?

Apparently 30 people per year jump. Some even survive with just broken bones strangely enough.

I watched the extended version of this video a year or two ago......it's freaking sad.

So they're going to spend 70 million to frick up the aesthetics of a national landmark to save some idiots that are just going to find another way to off themselves.

There's a brand new span on the Bay Bridge that would be lovely for suicides.

John and Judy Johnson are firm believers in the rights of fish to live in peace and tranquility.

One day, while shooting the shite with others of similar goodwill, they realized that each time someone jumped off the bridge, any fish swimming under the bridge were in imminent danger of becoming disoriented, traumatized, injured or even, well, effin' dead.

John and Judy and friends said "hey, this is San Francisco, we have power to protect our finned friends".

Petitions were signed, positions were pleaded, tears were shed... and money is now being spent.

In the Bay waters, the sturgeon are smiling and high-fiving.

All is well in the Universe.
