So I'm almost done with the first book and it was basically identical to the show. Should I just skip ahead where the show left off or will the second book differ moreso than the first?

Aside from the Tower of Joy sequence, the first book is almost a literal translation. CoK is when it really starts to change. Plus where we are in the series is pretty relative. Keep reading.

You'll miss out on a lot of details. Just read the book. In the first book you might have noticed a couple of scenes that were left out of the series. This kind of stuff accumulates and is much of the reason for reading the books in the first place.

As the show goes on it gets more and more out of whack with the books. They're still very close, but there are also some major differences.

Also, there are tons of characters and history you would miss out on if you try to skip ahead.

Finally, the storylines in the show have been left off at different points in the books. Some characters are still in book three, while others are well into book 5.

For the most part, season 1 was almost identical to the first book. Minor elements start to diverge in season 2, but in the grand scheme of things, the main story stays consistent.

The best part of reading the books is getting a deeper understanding of how all of the characters are related, and additional backstory that helps make more sense of what's going on. If you're not interested in that stuff, it might not even be worth your time to read the books.

Read the books in order. They really start to change things up in ACoK.

Read the books. You get all the wonderful insight to the inner thoughts of the pov characters. The way the first three books lay out is pure gold. Read the books so that when you watch the show now you can be butthurt like us.

The first season is very slavish to the book.

It starts to diverge. Season 3 and 4 and have a lot of differences.

Don't skip.

Each book differs more from the show than the last.

The third book is possibly the best novel I've ever read. The end of the third book is completely different from the ending to season 4. Keep reading or you will be completely confused.

You'll regret this decision later.

Not until book 4

Also, make sure you google "boiled leather combined ASOIAF reading order" and read the non-spoiler version to read books 4 and 5 at the same time. It makes both books much more enjoyable and less confusing.
