Sources have confirmed that attorney Mark Mayfield has committed suicide.
Mayfield, vice chairman of the Mississippi Tea Party, and is one of the three men charged with conspiring with Clayton Kelly to photograph U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran's bedridden wife in her nursing home and create a political video against Cochran.
Mark Mayfield of Ridgeland, an attorney and state and local tea party leader, was arrested last month along with Richard Sager, a Laurel elementary school P.E. teacher and high school soccer coach. Police said they also charged John Beachman Mary of Hattiesburg, but he was not taken into custody because of "extensive medical conditions." All face felony conspiracy charges. Sager also was charged with felony tampering with evidence, and Mary faces two conspiracy counts.
The arrest of Mayfield, well-known in political, business and legal circles, caused shock in Mississippi, in a criminal case and election that already had Mississippi in the national spotlight.

No, this is not new. He was arrested May 22.
But there's nothing extreme about the tea party......

Damn, that sucks for his family. Thoughts to them.

Mayfield was actually a good guy. He was not trying to take a pic. He refused but helped others get in the nursing home (stupid move). He was a very humble, nice guy. You never would have known he was involved in politics. He got in over his head. He was a really nice guy. Im not surprised he did this.

While what he did was incredibly bone-headed, on a list of things to kill yourself over, this ranks in the bottom three.
Clearly he had mental/emotional problems.

Nope. He besically destroyed his own career with this one stupid move. He was too embarrassed and mortified to take it. Some people just cannot handle this type of stuff and he was one of them.

I'm glad I never went to those Pine Belt Tea Part meetups now.

No you fricking idiot. Here is the deal.
His mother died this year. She lived at St. Catherine's. He knew the layout. So they got from him the info of how things worked, the layout of the place, where she was etc. That was the inside info they needed.
He had the most to lose out of everyone. He was always thought of as the sane member of the Tea Party, hence why everyone was shocked by his arrest. Couldnt' see him doing it. His major clients supposedly dropped him the day after the arrest. He did real estate closings and foreclosures.

Which means he had problems.
If a man has a family, he doesn't kill himself unless he's got some serious problems going on besides the tipping point. Your own embarrassment and failure is not as important as your family's welfare. I don't put the man down for it because I understand he was not coming from a good place. Just saying suicide is selfish.

This is becoming a real life John Grisham novel.

I don't disagree about suicide being selfish. When anyone chooses suicide they have convinced themselves it is the only way.

Right. Suicide is a perfectly legit sane thing to do, especially if one has a family.
My bad.
