Gedion the GOAT

Also, there's been rumors that his dad wants him to play for the US.

He has Ethiopian parents, was born in Germany and lived there until he was 9, and then moved to Maryland, before he was signed by one of the top clubs in the world. He can play for Germany, Ethiopia or the U.S., and the US has a good chance since he spent the majority of his teenage years with here. It all depends on if he gets citizenship.

Born in Germany to Ethiopian parents and moved to America when he was younger. Don't think he has citizenship now but I know that the USSF was working with him.

How many people do you know or even know of (other than this guy) in the U.S. with the first name of "Gedion" and the last name "Zelalem" ?

And how many do you personally know in the U.S. with the last name of Johnson or Jones?

Sounds like we are basically importing the talent to win.

Every nation "imports talent". Its 2014 not 1950.

They are all citizens, so what does it matter? Zelalem had his football schooling in the States though, and it would be a shame if he got away.

Based on the article ... this kid is not.

But ... I'm sure some strings could be pulled.

There are quite a few countries in this world which are older than 300 years. The immense majority.

To assign surnames a historical country status, to an economic and political exile colony which has admirably forged an amalgamated ´country´, is pretty ridiculous.

Duly noted ... if you meet a dude named "Gedion Zelalim" ... you will assume that he is most likely from Springfield, MO.

I will assume he is a foreigner until I learn otherwise ... which I do not see as a big deal.

Most people might assume a lot of Louisiana natives are foreign based on their surnames as well.

Looks like FIFA doesn't allow multiple free agency:

quote:

If he had played for Germany in those qualifiers, he no longer would have been eligible to represent the US; though FIFA allows a one-time change of association, as was the case when German-American prospect Julian Green recently committed to the USMNT, it can only be to a nation they were a citizen of at the time of their international debut. If he does obtain US citizenship, Zelalem would still be eligible to represent Germany and Ethiopia, in addition to the US.

No. Normally they´ve got to decide by their 21st birthday. If they play for the ´absolute´ side (all ages, typically 21 and over, although many younger have done so), in an official match, and not a friendly, then that´s their citizenship, football wise. No turning back, at that point.
