My mother called me distraught this morning.

My younger brother had apparently taken out a credit card in my mom's name and ran it up (around $3,000) over about a year's time. He missed a couple payments and they tracked her down.

I helped her do a little digging and found out it was my brother. He wasn't doing anything illicit - just buying stuff for his wife and kids, etc. I asked him if there was anything else and he said no, but there are a couple other things on mom's credit report that she doesn't recognize.

I'm assuming there's nothing we can do that doesn't land a young dad in jail, and I paid off the card we know about. Its what my dad would have done, and he's not here.

Short of an arse whooping, any advice? He swears there's nothing else, but I'm not so sure. The other two things we suspect have a $0 balance.

You should be able to see on the report the open credit lines. Anything she doesn't recognize, go to the vendor of the card/bank. Any idea how he was able to open the first card in her name?

Its pretty easy to do with an SSN online.

Hell, I could apply for 20 cards for my fiancee right now.

All he needs is her SSN. I don't know my parent's, but I could easily find it out.

You really have to suspect you brother of thievery from now on in your relationship. Did he think he wasn't going to get caught? He's probably got other issue(s) going, like gambling or cheating on his SO, a chemical problem, etc.

This sucks, have a man-to-man with the brother and tell him that for the next decade he's got to prove your suspicions wrong. Then get with your mom, let her know what the plan is and figure out how to protect her from any further theft. Your mom doesn't deserve this BS

Yeah, I'm pretty sure its just an online application thing. She still has her SSN printed on checks.

We tell her not to do that, but she is set in her ways and forgets about it every check re-order.

He's not going to tell me anything. And I promised I wouldn't tell my sister in law about the card.

Told my wife to perk up her ears at the pool this summer when the kids are swimming. If there is something like gambling/substance abuse, I need to get on that quick.

You gotta let him know you know. And put him on notice. He's abusing y'all's mom.

Sucks.

Good luck.

You're going to have to break that promise sooner or later.

Sit down with your mom and re-order her new checks. Shred the old ones.

I'd whip my brothers arse too.

Damn, I'm shocked they even print them. Most companies/agencies have forced that issue by now

What a piece of fricking shite.... How old is he?

Like others have said, yeah right.

You should beat the ever loving shite out of him. I'd even go so far as getting the statement, going to his house, and recouping any large items that he purchased.

Let him tell his wife "I'm sorry honey, I have to take this back because I bought it with a fraudulent card"... But frick, his wife may have even known about it.

You are enabling him by paying it off and helping him to hide this from others.

He's cheating on his wife, pull those statements and you'll have hotels, restaurants etc

any advice?

Get the most comprehensive credit reports you can and investigate each and every one of them.

Best thing you can do for your brother, let him be a man.

File a police report on him.

Thats why I said I would get the statement, figure out what all he bought, and go to the fricking house and take the items.

Again, I want to know how old he is?
