Almost 70% of cap on Guards. Is that normal?
Posted by adono on 6/26/14 at 1:59 pm00
Unless some changes are made (like getting rid of EG), our cap will be eaten up with salaries to Guards...70% to be exact. That just doesn't look normal to me. I can't think of another team that is built like this.
Another point, the site "HoopsHype" has our cap commitments at $48.5M next year. If the cap is at $63.2M, as projected, that means $14.7M still available (not counting the Asik money). Is there something missing?

Cap holds.. you have to dedicate money to having enough guys on the team. I think it's like 500k for every position not signed. So if they have 7 open spots, that's 3.5M.. something like that..

That's if we renounce the rights to everyone and just have placeholders.
As of now, we have the Bird rights to Aminu and others which count against us if not renounced. That's far more than $3.5m just for Aminu alone.

So, if the team wanted to, it could just renounce all of the holds except the minimum player requirement?
This is an area where I get lost. I just don't know a whole lot about all the different rules the NBA has...and they have a bunch of them.

Yes, we can renounce all our FAs to clear cap room.
Problem is that it means we can't re-sign any of our FAs for more than either our remaining cap space or one of the various exceptions like the Mid Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception.
That's not really an issue on a number of them, as we're unlikely to get Morrow back anyway, nor do we really care about Aminu's bird rights.

I'd have to run the numbers again, but I believe they left off anyone listed in red (team option) even though we've already picked up the options on Davis and Rivers.
Here are our current numbers for next year not including Asik:
Gordon $14,898,958
Evans $11,265,416
Holiday $10,404,495
Anderson $8,491,500
Davis $5,607,240
Rivers $2,439,840
Withey $816,482
Ajinca $981,084
Hold $507,336
Hold $507,336
Hold $507,336
--------------------------
Total $56,427,023
Cap Space $6,772,977

Yes, what I listed above includes renouncing rights to everyone we can renounce except Withey and Ajinca. The "Holds" are roster minimum charges to get the roster up to 12. Technically it's only 11 roster spots because the guy you end up signing is number 12 and replaces what that hold would be.
