True, but my comment was not about European teams, but rather American teams.
In South Africa 2010, 7 Americans teams made it through the group phase. In Korea/Japan 2002, only 4 made it through. In USA 1994 (the last time the WC was in the Americas), only 4 made it through. In Mexico 1986, only 5 made it through.
I would go on, but any farther back and the WC format was so different as to make it incomparable to the modern tournament.
The point is that more American teams have qualified for the second round of the WC than ever before. That is pretty significant.
