I just read that Stephen Stills played percussion on the Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing." Nothing against either of them (both in my top 20 artist/bands), but it blew my mind. Does the Music Board have any other surprising pairings?

Duane Allman on Wilson Pickett doesn't count.

Does Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young count?

A young Keith Whitley was lead singer in Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain boys bands back in the early 70's. May be common knowledge, but I didn't know it until a year or so ago. A teenage Ricky Skaggs was in the band too..

eh, fairly common knowledge, I think. Plus, all those California bands of that time were somewhat communal, weren't they?

eta.- Didn't blow my skirt up, but may blow someone's mind. Was thinking this could be an interesting Trivia thread. I'm not hear (yep) to guide the thread, just to read interesting tidbits.

Ry Cooder played guitar on Captain Beefheart's Safe as Milk LP (1967). Donovan sang the duet with Alice Cooper on Billion Dollar Babies. Legendary studio musician Carol Kaye played bass guitar on the Mothers of Invention's Absolutely Free LP.

Carol Kaye and Frank Zappa: Freak Out, indeed.

Stevie Ray Vaughn plays guitar on Bowie's "Let's Dance"

John Lennon does backing vocals on "Fame", also by Bowie

The Meters and Lowell George from Little Feat are the backing band in Robert Palmer's "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley", the whole album not just that song

There are some others I'll post when I remember

Fair enough. Per wiki they're on "Sailin Shoes", "From a Whisper to a Scream", "How Much Fun", and "Sneakin' Sally".

Ok, The Meters are on HALF of the Sneakin Sally album. Feel better?

Ry Cooder
Plays backing guitar on a bunch of stuff for Randy Newman. Back On My Feet Again, Baltimore, and pretty much every Randy song with slide guitar

He also plays the slide in Sister Morphine by the Rolling Stones and the slide on Willin' by Little Feat

Ry Cooder

Also played slide on the first recording of Willin after Lowell George injured his hand with a model airplane. Does a hell of a job too.
