Rich Lowry (editor of National Review) via Politico

quote:

That the emails were lost beyond recovery will strike most people as implausible because it is practically an axiom of modern life that emails never go away. Of course, its entirely possible that the IRS is so incompetent and its bureaucracy so archaic (it was using tape to back up emails) that it can’t manage to preserve what most people can’t get rid of.

This, in fact, amounts to the IRS’s best defense. “It’s a gross, big bureaucracy,” MSNBC Host Alex Wagner said on “Morning Joe,” stalwartly rallying to the side of the agency. “They’re using really old machines,” she added, “like 1960s Soviet-style bureaucracy.”

How comforting. The left is constantly let down by the same inefficient and unaccountable government structures that it wants to aggrandize and protect from reform. At the onset of the IRS scandal, David Axelrod explained that the president couldn’t possibly know all that is happening beneath him “because the government is so vast.”

The IRS has given republicans the perfect trump card. For any and every proposed expansion of goverment, republicans can (and should) play the "How are you to xyz if the IRS can't even keep up with their emails".

The democrat's excuse? "The government is simply too big to do it correctly". Uhhh.....you not only admitted the government is too big, but you also demonstrated it.

I'm telling you, this is a big, big deal.

You likely don't know this, but for archiving, magnetic tape is the best that exists.

Not if you continually overwrite the same tape.

Agreed

The commissioner must have said "I have 90,000 employees I am responsible for?"

Amazing that Ms Conner could not remember one name she has reporting to her...some guy named Ben?

"I had a lot of people bringing me information"

Yet she couldn't name one person

I thought, this is government and it's big ugly head demonstrating to us just how inefficient it is.

The Fair Tax would be a good way to reform the IRS.

It obviously needs it.

Not really if you just use your common sense. It's common sense the govt is best suited to take care of us. The IRS commish only needs his common sense to determine wrongdoing. It's common sense there's too much data out there for anyone to be able to handle it. It's common sense that the govt should take all privately owned guns. It's common sense to expect casualties in a large operation. Hard drives are crashing all the time. The HD crashes at the EPA over emails only gives further credence to the IRS's story on Lerner's emails. When HDs start crashing at the DOJ, it will only be more proof that the IT guys are the guilty bastards.

You can't get rid of the IRS. They're now the Obamacare enforcers. It's the govt form of mission creep.

i've been harping on this, and not from a partisan standpoint necessarily. i try to avoid the constant outrage and sensationalism, but this is a true crisis of legitimacy. the average american isn't afraid or concerned with the FBI, the CIA, the Armed Forces, or really even the NSA (I mean the Greenwald bookselling hype aside). But the IRS has the power and opportunity to ruin the average Joe's life without due process and has done so many a time.

I'd never defend what they did here, but I can certainly understand how it happens. If you've never managed backup tapes, they are a royal pain in the arse.

That being said, one of the common tenants of backup and disaster recovery is to have multiple backups stored on multiple media types. It's really hard to believe that they wouldn't be using tape as a secondary backup, and using some form of disk to disk backup as a primary.

If only they knew how to play cards

Seriously, though, Gowdy is a threat - he's smart, unafraid, brutally logical. The rest of them? Might as well be the cast of a reboot of The Keystone Cops.

"Republicans - snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, fairly reliably, since 1932."

Yea, its a big deal but not just an haymaker for one political party over another. Its a big deal because a government apparatus used its power to thwart a group of Americans. That's what makes this a big deal.

To hell with the political angle. This is serious shite that's taking place before our eyes.

I hope the slow trickle of info and the display of the ineptitude of the IRS continues for months.

Maybe this will lead to a public outcry and a complete overhaul of the tax system.

Let them continue to do just that, Obamacare and corparate taxes.....The fair tax would be in place on goods and services for an individual.

Only then could the actually concentrate on corporate tax fraud and actually look for Obamacare fraud as well.

It is but it won't matter to the vast major of voters who support Democrats. From their perspective it's all a racist based conspiracy to bring down our first black President. And never underestimate the influence of a largely liberal progressive MSM.

Taxes are vital to the Democrats platform if not the most vital. The irony is they let the IRS become so unethical and so many Democrats do everything in their power to avoid taxes.

Many really rich Democrats refuse to pay extra taxes to the government to get to the fair amounts they spew others should pay. The government accepts extra payments yet none step up.
