@Sheadixon: #LSU DC John Chavis said DJ Welter had "one of the better springs I've been around." He breaks down his LBs

quote:

Welter (6-1, 235) started all 13 games in the middle of LSU’s defense last season and was second on the team with 80 tackles. He was also the subject of much debate on message boards and talk radio as some felt that there were better options that would make the Tigers stronger against the run. As far as Chavis is concerned, Welter brings a lot to the table and is coming off an impressive spring where he added about 10 pounds to his frame. “D.J. gives our defense a little bit of that calming effect,” Chavis said. “He knows the calls, and he knows how to get people lined up…I’m excited about D.J. and think he brings a lot to the table. “But again, he knows as well, that he’s going to have to be on top of his game, and he’s going to have to perform at a high level every single day. He went into spring practice with that kind of attitude, and to be quite honest, he had one of the better spring practices that I have been around.”

Chief will never throw a player under the bus. Here's hoping it is either true or he gets benched quick - perform or move on.

He did win the Jimmy Taylor Award this spring.(The comprehensive Spring Award for Outstanding Leadership, Effort and Performance - per lsusports.net)

He had a pretty rough season last year but seemed to come on strong towards the end of the season. I'm going to keep the faith in Welter and, like any rational human being, will defer to our top-notch defensive coordinator who happens to be a sort of expert on linebackers. I somehow doubt he put Welter out there if we had better or more capable options in the middle.

But he does give candid and honest assessments. He wouldn't just blow smoke about a player if he didn't mean it.

So, we should bench him even if he's our best option at MLB? Makes sense.

Sure he does. He helps put his own defense to sleep.

Chavis' obsession with Welter is ridiculously funny.
