The movie was based on an article/short story that appeared in National Lampoon magazine around '79 or '80. As funny as the movie is, the short story was hysterical. IIRC, it was titled something like "Our Last Family Vacation." Obviously, the storyline shared some similarities with the movie, but I recall the story being much more vulgar, funnier and with a quite different ending!
If one of you Internet sleuths can find it, I don't think you'll be disappointed!
