In March my wife had her former boss send her an email out of the blue telling her that she wanted her to come work for her. She liked working with this person so a week later my wife went to visit the place and got the spill on the job.

They made a verbal offer that was a good bit more than she makes now and she verbally accepted the offer. She told me she was going to put in her 2 weeks notice at her current job and I told her to hold off until she had everything in writing. Over the few weeks they play phone tag and then she sent her the company's handbook. But she never gets anything in writing. 3 months later still nothing in writing and only fed lines of the company having a new HR and such. My wife finally gave up contacting her. Stressed her out over a job she never even pursued and got her hopes up over nothing and thank god she listened to me and didn't put in her 2 weeks notice.

Yep. I learned this lesson the hard way. A few years out of college I interview for a job and get an offer, but not in writing. I accept, and put in my notice. That job only let me finish out the current week instead of the 2 weeks, and the following week the guy that hired me was fired. He didn't tell anyone else at the company about his offer to me, and they told me they weren't going to fill that position.

that sucks. something similiar happened to me in 2001. They fired the hiring veep, and they wouldn't hire me until they filled the veep role. I ended up not going. i had already given my notice at a macro level, I told the company I was in they had me for 2 more months. but not for this specific position, just that I was leaving.

Worked out well as they went under the next year, and I ended up at my current job which has its issues but in the end was a good move.
