Pretty good, but a lot of dog running over there. My family hunts a lot in Perry County and there are some good deer taken every year.

eta: a lot of that area of the state either was or is leased for pine timber, and it's hard to find decent mature hardwoods. If you can find old growth jump on it.

Yeah, I guess, that's just where I've seen it first hand. Also there's a pulp mill right down the hwy in New Augusta so it's especially bad there. Not that there aren't deer, just a ton of clear cutting over the years and all that comes with it.

I hope its cheap. I been looking for a quality place closer to the coast for a long time. I aways end up back in Vicksburg.

South MS is completely different than North MS, with exception of some of the river bottoms further south. The delta is also its own area. The south has more pines, less agriculture, this smaller deer. More hardwoods and agriculture further north, and obviously in the delta=bigger deer. Not gonna lie, I see absolutely no point in coming to deer hunt in MS from LA if you are just gonna hunt some cheap place in the pine belt...

I agree with you. Anything along the ms river will be good hardwoods but the rest of the state is mostly pine trees. My parents bought 300 acres in northeast MS and not many oaks up there. Was at one time but mostly planted pine now

I own a 40 acre plot just west of McLain in the NF. It is mostly 20 yo pine with some hardwood hollows/creekbed. Like drunken tigah said, lots of dogs run the public lands around there and they really do have the "dogs can't read posted signs" attitude. I rolled with it because I like hearing dogs and hunting over hounds. I even hunted with one of the groups from the area from time to time. I shot 1 - 2 deer every year out there, but hunted pretty hard without bait.

Last year I moved to a club in AR, saw way more deer. Leased my place to a guy that put out over $1000 in corn and shot one nice buck and two small deer. The one that got away was a monster buck and he is renewing the lease even thought he hated the dogs and the dog hunters.

TLDR: hunting there is OK if you don't mind hounds, but there are WAY better options for deer hunting.
