I have two of them and my son has one. My opinion is that they're great.

Roku3 has more apps available but truthfully, most are obscure stuff few people will find useful. In fact, FireTV has more than I use and includes all the "big hitters". FireTV has a quad-core processor twice as fast as the Roku and 4X the memory. I personally find the voice command feature more useful than the headphones jack on the Roku3 remote but, that's a personal thing. All 3 of the ones I've had experience with have been flawless and have very quick response.

I might add that I think the FireTV may be a good choice if your first (or only) streaming box but, there's certainly nothing wrong with a Roku3 and would be no reason to switch.

Yeah, this would be my first and i do have a Prime account already so that is why i lean toward the Fire. The extra apps in the Roku and the fact that Amazon is in itself a streaming app, which makes we worry about access over time, give me slight pause.

Roku 3 wins on account of having HBOGO.

Don't use it myself and had not noticed it not being on FireTV but when I checked I noticed it does have Showtime Anytime. The overwhelming time I spend streaming involves WatchESPN, Amazon Prime or Netflix with just a smattering of other stuff. I will say that they are adding apps at a fairly quick pace.

Fire wins on account of being able to run XBMC?

I have Apple TV and the apps are pretty much limited to what they will allow. Great outlet for iTunes stuff and Netflix is here; ESPN, PBS, Lifetime, Disney stuff, History Channel, Bloomberg, and some others. My question is this: How does Apple TV compare with FireTV? And while I don't want to get rid of A-TV, would I be glad/sad to add Fire as a second streaming box? I could move one to a different TV. Maybe I've answered my own question.

I've seen a list of the FireTV apps somewhere, maybe Amazon. There's both similarities & differences between all the streaming apps - the FireTV has what I need (love Amazon Prime) and the hardware specs are better than Roku3 or Apple if you consider that important.

Edit to add - I think Best Buy will swap one out if you try & don't like it.
