soccer is getting bigger in america...

So I'm in jiffy lube this morning and I changed the channel to Italy vs Uruguay. A old black man walks in sees the game and says" man we need a result thursday" I was shocked. I'm talking Vietnam vet old.

happens every four years. I understand it's growing, but it's not like everyone just woke up last week and decided to love soccer.
Honestly, after July, you won't hear about soccer in the general public for a long time.

I remember it being really big 4 years ago
4 years ago I was about to enter my 5th year senior year in college and me and my football team mates were all really into the World Cup... but once the USA was eliminated against Ghana that one Saturday Morning we all went back to not caring anymore

the world cup is perfect for American sports. football is over, basketball is over, and Americans have nothing else to do or care about. The media can flood the tele and magazines with world cup stories and people can not help but notice.
That's not a bad thing either. It puts a lot of soccer news into public eye. Gains interest in young kids and adults and you see people become more knowledgeable about the rules.
However, in six weeks people will be talking about training camps in football.

Champions League this year will be huge in the US, and so will the Euros 2016.
Euros are a really fun tournament to watch because you get to see superstars carry their country that aren't usually in the World Cup, like Zlatan

The market will decide soccer's popularity
Until the USA can get a soccer league that pulls in the best talent in the world like in MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL; it won't enough to justify investments from the businessmen who would need to make it happen.

People often forget how easy it is to cheer for the USA as a citizen. Especially when you don't have much fandom invested (most haven't followed them and if we lose, we lose...their lives will go on). It's patriotic to go to the local bar and wear red, white and blue.

When my dad is talking about soccer and games outside of the USA games it made me do a double take. The last world cup was big but because of the time difference didn't really seem to catch the older casual crowd. While they will leave when its over its still cool to have so many people in on it.

Its bigger than it was 4 years ago. viewership average per game is up. Univision already matched its ratings from 2010. ESPN is up 28%
a 16 million and 26+ million viewed game both records for mens soccer. US game is 3rd most watched sporting event in last calender year after Super bowl and BCS NC game (which is basically even on the ratings).
Keeps improving and getting better. I think its amazing how many more european league games i can watch now. 10 years ago it was a struggle for the average fan to watch a game like me with Man Utd. i would be shocked now if i couldn't watch a game at home even against a shite opponent

While true bars don't fill up for Olympics or world baseball classic or any other world wide event. And unlike say a superbowl party everyone that is in attendance seems to have genuine interest in the outcome and not just being there to be seen.

That's not as relevant as a lot of people think. Soccer in this country is growing for a lot of reasons and MLS is only one of many.

I agree, but a lot of that also has to do with the time zone the games are being played in, the quality of games this year, and the overall quality of the tournament.

true but i think its being done more than last time around. But certainly the support now doesn't mean the sport has 'made' it. certainly helps though.

However I've tried to get into the EPL but I just can't because I just can't just start being a fan of a team I've never cared about. A lot of people just seem to randomly attach themselves to English powerhouses.

I'm afraid that 2018 and 2022 World Cups being on the opposite side of the world may slow up some of the positive momentum here in the States...hope I'm wrong.
