IIRC some foreign dude had everything setup to ferry people and cars from Mandeville to Metairie and back but there were permit issues. Almost every commuter I spoke with then (2-3 years ago?) really wanted it to happen if only to lessen traffic a bit. Did it get killed by one of the city councils?

Probably didn't donate enough money to the New Orleans City Council to get the appropriate licensure.

Would be a long ride on a ferry, huh?

Mandeville certainly wanted it, I know that. I rarely crossed the bridge when I lived in mandeville but I know how much of an issue it is for them and it seems like Nola does whatever they can to keep EVERYONE using the causeway

I think the trip was at or under an hour one way, about the same as your reg commute but you can smoke with cigarettes or buy a ferry hooker while you wait

I think it was supposed to be a high speed ferry. Not like the Mississippi River ferries.

they had the permit, it was a land issue and wasnt feasible for the passengers. Round trip would have cost $40 per person

How slow do you drive?

I can cross the causeway in 30 minutes.

I think a maglev train from one side to the other would be nice.

Mandeville to Metry in five minutes.
Have a park and ride on each side, with light rail..

and..

will never happen so I will go look for more NSFW pics.

So can I but I drive at about the speed limit when I drive. An extra 10 MPH won't save me that much time but at least I know I won't get a $200+ speeding ticket in the effort to save all that time speeding across the bridge

Right. I remember some dude tossing the idea around. They did the same thing with a MagLev train. (My personal favorite )

Nobody was ever close to "having everything set up" on either.

Maybe because it was an insane idea that never made the slightest bit of sense? The ferries crossing the MS are bleeding money and that's like a 300 yard trip. Yet this dude was going to turn a profit on a 40 mile trip?

I believe it was proposed to go from somewhere on the Mandeville lakefront to West End.

Still probably faster to drive but definitely a longer drive than 30 minutes.

This guy was in the Pic all the time it seemed. I almost felt like, even if delayed, this dude was getting this ferry shite done, I guess I was wrong

The Pontchartrain Express 1 is a hydrofoil-supported catamaran (HYSUCAT), which will be discussed at further length in the vessel specifications section. This catamaran offers high initial stability in rough chop and large deck areas, while the hydrofoils provide reduced resistance which in turn reduces the energy (i.e. propulsion, fuel, etc.) consumption. Pontchartrain Express 1 is also equipped with the latest navigation instruments, radar and safety equipment, enabling the ferry to run on schedule during heavy rain, fog and strong winds.
