I have a big saltist that I use for reds and drum but want something lighter for inshore and surf use. I was looking at the stradic CI4+ but im not reading that it can be used for surf. Any recommendations? Plan on pairing it with a Lews 7' med 365 carbon nanolar.

Used a Ci4 this weekend. So damn light. I want one. I don't know why it wouldn't be able to be used for the surf. i would imagine you would be good to go.

Yeah. I'm just not sure how durable it is. Are all shimano 4000 sizes the same?

I think the frame size is the same on all 4000 reels. It's made of Carbon Fiber, should be pretty durable. Guy at Bass Pro said the Shimano reels starting with the Saros have sealed bearings, which seems like something you would want from a surf reel.

I'm sure some would disagree, but I think that 4000 is bigger than what you need for general inshore use. We were catching 35" reds on the 3000 series with no problems.

I don't surf fish, but I could see wanting more line capacity in that instance.

We put Power Pro on most reels.

I just tried the super slick though and it popped several times. I don't remember exactly what # I bought, but it was over 20# for sure.

I'm don't know if it just isn't as abrasion resistant as the regular power pro or what, but I will be relining it before I go back out.

Perhaps, but I've never had any other line pop. I'm no knot tying expert, I tie the same knot for everything, but I've never had problems before. And this is heavy line >20#, shouldn't pop from a knot. But I guess you never know.

I'll be relining anyway, better safe than sorry.

I have a different opinion on surf fishing.

I sure as hell would not take a high dollar Stradic into the surf. I don't care how well sealed up they say it is.

I buy cheap 30-40 dollar reals for surf fishing. Clean them afterwards and when they go out I chunk them.
