Looking for a semi-local league for lil man. Is this the league to get in? Better atmosphere? Fair prices?
Looking for pros/cons.
I know youth baseball gets slammed but surely its exaggerated right?

Both usssa and grand slam have their issues, but neither have as many issues as cypress mounds does. Was a great park run by morons till it was in need of a lot TLC. Got to get over the money since both organizations are in for a buck(it's a buisness, who isn't trying to make a dollar?). Grand slam is a good option for aa or aaa type player but if he's at the top of his class the only option is usssa. Be forewarned any talk of youth baseball will get you hammered on this site. I have put three boys through youth baseball and it's never cheap. Some kids can find competition at the local park while others have to travel across the country to find it.

I coached a league team at Cypress Mounds for five years. I haven't coached for the last two years because I'm taking a break from baseball.
But my experience at Cypress Mounds was a good one. It's not cheap, but the team always managed to pay the bill. The fields are very good, the people running the league ran it well. They make mistakes just like anyone does, but most conflicts were created by coaches who couldn't keep certain playing dates... that sort of thing. No problems with the umpires. The environment is safe and secure.
Level of competition was on par with AA/AAA league ball anywhere else. If you're looking for league style play, then you are looking to avoid tournament teams. You won't be able to entirely. There's always a couple of tournament teams that pose as league teams in every age group. So they usually beat every team in the league. You will find equal AA competition, though.
Overall, I was always satisfied with the league. When considering the other options I'm aware of in Baton Rouge, I would be confident choosing Cypress for league play.

the only teams that don't play both are usually the ones with parents or coaches banned by the other.
I like grand slam's pitching rules better.

Him and his buddy will be in 7u next spring. Being recruited by a cypress mound league team hence the question.

When I hear this used referring to a 7 year old always sends up a red flag.

7u Cypress will be fine if you trust the coach.. .also Marucci has a league now for that age, it is only like 100$ and I think the teams are "drafted" so they are basically even... there really is no "instructional" stuff in town for that age right now.. Bill Dailey has his "Pitch by Pitch" program for that age, but we did it last year and it was terrible, basically no instrucion at all, unorganized and there were not enough coaches....David Delucci's Extra Innings Baseball may be starting something next year for that age

As a coach and a dad involved for the last 20 years
it has turned into a racket. My advice if you are a serious parent who wants him to learn the game, talk to the coaches.
What's there experience, levels played at etc... Marucci is the way to go after 12 they play perfect game tourneys and that's where it's at now. Lots of scouts in the stands and the compition is top notch. My 16 year old gets new inquires after every weekend. Again it's all how serious you want to be. My last piece of advice, practice alot at home. The best kids practice constantly. Good luck.

Red flag all you want but its the truth. These boys can throw from the fence to the pitchers mound and will probably hit a few over the fence

we play both and much prefer Grand Slam..Grand Slam is moving into LA and making lots of noise, we hope to see more GS tourneys at more parks next summer
the only reason we play USSSA is because you have to play at least 4 tourneys to qualify to play in their State Tourney and World Series.

I can throw a baseball from one goalpost and make it thru the one on the other side of the football field (in hs) but it doesnt mean i was worth a shite

Ummm...no. The set up of the 7u league at Marucci is just awful. It is comprised of 2-3 REALLY good area teams of handpicked players (i.e., have tryouts and cuts) and then 4-5 school teams who have played for a couple of years together...then, the rest of the league is comprised of the leftover players who simply registered for the league...many of whom had never picked up a bat or glove before.
Not a joke...there was a team that lost all 15-20 games by an average of double digit runs.
Just an awful premise for the league. I truly hope they make some changes to allow for better parity. In my view, the only way to run a league like that is with a draft or random placement.

Look dude that's great. I'm glad you don't think he's up to par and I really don't care what you think tbh.
His coach (diff sport) coached lc and compares the two pretty often. He likes baseball. He quit rec games after three games because he doesn't want to play and not record outs and not keep score.
I don't pump his head up, but he is different. It is what it is.

Hmm...I knew a couple of kids that were just assigned to teams, I thought the whole league was like that.... they should draft teams at that age to make them even as possible...

He's 7. What is par for 7? Stopping a ground ball and throwing with decent accuracy?

It's amazing how serious some people take 7 year old baseball.
