I used odin to root my phone a while back, but tried to install the CyanogenMod over the weekend but it failed.

Rooting it is only one step to install a new brand of Android.

Not sure. But a secondary effect is that it may brick it.

When I try to install the CyanogenMod, it gives me an error that it can't sync with my phone. If I do a factory reset, will it remove the previous root?

Not a huge deal since battery life is shite right now. I'm close enough to get an upgrade and have other options.

Your gonna have to flash the stock rom back on there. If you do the factory reset it might brick it but it definitely won't unroot the phone.

Man, I'd like to root my phone, but I just don't think I understand what the heck I could do or how to do it once I did.

Not to mention, I have an issue that requires me to return my Note 3 just today for a new one, so it may not be the best idea.

Yes. Go through all the steps then says it can't connect with my phone. I'll try again next weekend.

Just rooting it isn't really a big deal. It allows some pretty awesome software to work (Titanium Back Up Pro is the big one). Your service carriers might not like it, but it's not illegal, although it can void your warranty. The cool thing rooting can let you do is install a new rom. The problem is, if you aren't following a trusted source, it is possible to brick your phone.

It's probably a good thing, but my work/cell phone is a S4 Active, which is locked up insanely tight. I could technically root, but I would not be able to enjoy a new rom so I just chose to use Nova Launcher Pro.

This is correct!

Hard resetting a phone doesn't actually change the software version of the phone.
