Microsoft today announced that it will provide up to $650 in store credit for select MacBook Air models, in an effort to get MacBook Air owners to switch to the company's new Surface Pro 3, which it claims has the "power of a laptop in a lightweight, versatile form." Trade-ins must be conducted within a Microsoft retail store.

The entry-level Core i3 Surface Pro 3 retails for $799, with improved versions sporting a Core i5 and Core i7 processor available at prices between $999 and $1949. With the discount for turning in a MacBook Air, customers could pay just $150 for an entry-level model.

According to the terms of the deal, trade-in values may vary, which suggests that only good-condition current-generation MacBook Airs will be eligible for the full $650 credit. It is not clear how much Microsoft is offering for older models at this time.

It worked great the first time they tried this. People were lining up at Microsoft stores across the country to trade up their Apple crap for shiny new Surfaces.

So tempting :/

Just got my MBA 2 weeks ago tomorrow, but now that I ordered my Lumia 1020, I'm wishing I had gone with tSP3 instead of tMBA.

You should have waited for the iPhone 6 to complement your new Mac. iOS 8 and Yosemite will work great together.

Top 5 features of iOS 8

New features such as Extensibility, Airdrop (b/w Mac and iOS devices) and Handoff makes having an iPhone that much nicer with a Mac. It pays to stay within a single ecosystem these days. Also if you are interested in taking good pictures, the camera on the iPhone 6 should be as good as the one on the 1020 if not better. If you are still within the 14 day return window for the phone, return it. Or you could return your MBA and get the SP3.

Wait, the new iPhone will have a 41mp camera? If so, I'll definitely return the Lumia. I just assumed it would have t5s camera with software updates.

How are any of those features unique to a iOS8 or a Mac?

Highly doubtful

I didn't realize the 1020 was the one with the PureView 41 MP camera. Nokia comes out with so many models, I get confused. The Nokia will definitely will the MP spec war, but MP is not everything. It will come down to what you want to do with the pictures. Why do you need to take pictures at 41 MP anyway? Are you going to blow it up to 20' X 30' posters or something? Do you want to zoom into the pictures after the fact and capture cropped smaller sections of the photo? I believe you have to choose the option to save the 41 MP raw file on the 1020 if you actually want that, otherwise the phone is only storing standard 5 MP pictures. Read more about the 1020 camera here: LINK

For casual photography most modern smartphones take pretty good pictures (the Nexus phones being the exception sometimes). The iPhone camera is not great at any one thing, but it does a good job in most scenarios.

Here is the iPhone 5S camera review from DP Review . The iPhone 6 should only get better from here: LINK

The iPhone 5s, running Apple’s fresh iOS 7, is an excellent phone with a very good camera. Image quality under most conditions is among the top of the class of “conventional” smartphone camera units: you have to look to the Nokia Lumia 1020 to find something that’s hands-down better across the board, though in good light the best 13-megapixel sensors do capture more detail.

The camera app is supremely easy to use, and the 5s’ powerful processing makes for class-leading burst speed and excellent responsiveness. Users looking to upgrade from older iPhones shouldn’t be disappointed. That said, there’s nothing in the 5s that changes the fundamental balance of power in the mobile photography world: users committed to other OSes won’t necessarily see a reason to switch.

I haven't seen the email and phone call handoff between a cell phone and computer anywhere else. Correct me if I am wrong. See it in action here:

I want it for the zoom aspect. I don't really go above and beyond with my phone for anything but pictures, so this purchase makes sense to me. The only thing I'm worried about is the time between photo's it takes while the image is saved. But, I know that's generally worst when saving both the 5mp and 38mp photo's to your phone. You can get by with just the 5mp photo's.

I wanted badly to wait on the 6, but the home button on my 4 is starting to go. I remember telling somebody else on here a few weeks back
"the camera is pretty much the most important part of the phone to me, as everything else seems pretty similar across the board" when speaking on the M8.

...which instantly reminded me of the Lumia 1020 being an option.

And, I thought I was screwed as I was positive I threw away all of the packaging for my MBA, but I just found it under another box I had from amazon
Will be returning it tomorrow. Sad, because I like it, but I really only got it because I assumed I'd stay with the i6 this next round.

I'm sure I'll be back to apple someday. My i4 was a beast and I would still be happy using it if I had to(with a repaired home button).

Looks a lot like Motto Connect to me.

The email part has literally been around for a long long time with imap. You can type a sentence on your phone and it magically shows up in gmail. Google Hangouts does the phone part and has for a while.

Almost every single google application works the exact same way as this. Google Maps, google drive, google keep, google voice, google docs, etc. Office 365 does it too.

Apple is going to market the hell out of it and make it even more mainstream. That isn't a bad thing, but these features literally already exist. This will make it better for all users

My biggest issue with the Surface line is that it was supposed to do all this stuff with its first generation. It was supposed to be a more productive version of an iPad - which has replaced laptop web browsing for millions. Then the second Surface Pro came out. It cost $1000 and was supposed to be the answer to so many complaints. Now they expect consumers to think they've finally nailed it on the 3rd try? And they still don't include the keyboard/cover that is essential to using the thing?

Say what you will about Apple, but they never claimed the iPad was anything. They created a device, released it, and said "use it to do whatever you want." And it sold like gangbusters because my 88 year old grandmother and my 60 year old mother (who is worse than her mother) can use them with no problem. As can I, the business user who regularly uses Numbers and Pages to send documents and spreadsheets.

No, they nailed it already. Do you expect them not to come out with an update device?
