Not being soccer smart, is this dude that good to make the USMNT at 32 and start or are we that thin that we have Bradley Cooper from Hit and Run playing damn near 90'?

I don't know, guys. I appreciated the reference to a flop from 2 years ago. And it's not even a bad lookalike comparison.

On a serious note, he is probably our least skilled player. However, he works his arse off and knows his role. He has zero ego and is willing to do the dirty work and take none of the glory. When Jermaine Jones was in that role, he wanted to go forward and help the team in other ways (and I don't blame him. Jones is much more talented than Beckerman). This would leave us prone to counter attacks.

With the way this team is structured, I think Beckerman is very good for the first 60-70 minutes of most games. I would look to take him out for Mix Diskerud though if we are looking for more offense out of central midfield.

Also, how you can hate a guy who posed for these photos

All I know is that being 32 and this being your first start at the highest level of a sport that requires incredible athleticism and endurance isn't what I would say is normal

I do not hate this guy, he's actually the one outside of Jones (holy shite, that goal) that I rooted for specifically. The dreads are cool as frick to me, that's my kind of style. Now, I do think he looks like Bradley Cooper in Hit and Run but that's neither here nor there. My question was is he really the best or is he what was left?

He is a very good role player. A guy who sits back as a defensive midfielder and disrupts an opponent's counterattacks. Beckerman is fairly useless when we are playing teams that are worse than us. For example if we played Iran or South Korea I would never play him. But when playing stronger teams that have speedy players and can turn any position into something dangerous, he is a good fit for this team.

Think of him as a mentally stable Dennis Rodman or something. Beckerman has easily been Klinsmann's best US discovery, although it took him a bit to figure out which games he was best suited for.

He's extremely effective in the role we ask for him to play. He's not going to dazzle you with step overs, or curl shots into the corner, but he's going to stop up the midfield, play smart passes, and work his arse off.

Sometimes when your team changes coaches and playing style, there are 32 year olds with dreads that aptly fill new needs.

Beckerman may not be the greatest player in the world, but he fills our CDM spot very well and his discipline allows our more creative midfielders to manufacture more chances for the team.

He was fantastic in the Gold Cup.

I think it's been a big benefit for us to have two 30+ year old veterans who are World Cup debutantes. They are both making the most of their opportunities in a way I'm not sure a younger man would be able to.

I will say I didn't notice him screw up last night. I'm not sure how well I'd be able to critique him even if he had a bad game with my limited knowledge but he didn't SEEM to make things worse. The consensus seems to be he's a bit passive but a really good game manager?

I thought the Gold Cup was the coming out party for Mix, and Bedoya had some solidity games there, too. Beckerman was fine in the sense that he allowed Mix to go up more, but I think a guy like Edu could have done the same.

He is not a great passer and has weak offensive skills, at least compared to guys starting international games. His defensive skills are probably better than any midfielder besides Jones, but unlike Jones, he isn't an insane person. This means that he will, accumulate plenty of yellow cards but no reds. This is huge.
