Why do hipsters want to act poor?

I saw some the other day walking through a shitty neighborhood looking at a map like they were actually reading it, but they both had their iPhones in their hands. Is it northern white guilt? Is it cool to be poor now? Is it cool to act/look trashy?
I understand that they wanna act poor, but it is kinda tough when they wear stuff made by Filson, RayBan, custom $800 boots by White's, eat at $30-40/plate restaurants, and all live in $1500+ a month apartments. Not to mention that most of them went to expensive private colleges paid for by their parents, and scoff at solid public colleges

Well they do both carry the same entitlement mentality but that's pretty much where the similarities in modern hipsters and '60/70's hippies ends IMO.

They pretend to dress like they got it from the second hand store. They complain about people going to eat at places like Commander's, but eat at just as expensive places around the city. They say they live in "mid-city" to act like they are struggling, but actually live in a newly renovated apartment on a street loaded with $500,000+ houses

Annoy me would be putting it better. They act superior because they put the image out there that they are underprivileged and struggling. Somehow that makes them better than regular people with money
I still cannot figure out how the guys can wear skinny jeans. My nuts would be popping from side to side so much, I'd be laying on the ground in pain
