I was going to let the best buy guys come out an do it but it ends up being $350. Screw that!

It seems that anchoring into the mortar would be easier to patch in the future in case we took it down for whatever reason. I've read mixed things which probably means both would work fine. Does anyone have experience with this?

Eta : this is where it's going. Probably going with a 50inch.

ETA:

Put it up yesterday. Bought a dewalt 8 amp rotary corded drill ($60). Drilled into brick. Basic masonary drill bits dulled quickly and I would recommend the higher quality ones that work with both rotary and hammer drills. I probably spent around $40 on bits. I used a sanus mount that was $90 at best buy. Took about 4 hrs including 2 trips to Home Depot. It could easily be done under an hour if you have everything you need. Even with buying a new drill I came out ahead vs paying best buy $350. It's a samsung 50 in btw.

downside to both. Get a really good bit to drill with and I would think you don't want to use a hammer drill on it.

Mortar rots over time but not fast enough to worry about with amounted tv. It is easy to patch if/when you remove the tv and mount from the wall.

Brick tends to crack and crumble easy but is more consistent than mortar is.

Into brick, always into brick.

The motor is weak.

(ETA) not an expert but years ago I worked for a Diebold subcontractor and when we installed security cameras and such it was always into brick.

We also used hammer drills.

Just drill a hole where you need it, be it in mortar or brick and use a wide expanding toggle screw anchor.

Into brick. I have a thread on the OB. I'll see if I can find it.

LINK

Rent or buy a Hammerdrill and a masonry bit. Use anchor sleeves that expand. Tapcons sucked. The brick is usually a veneer and hollow inside. The mortar is brittle and should only be used for decorative hangings.

This. Except I've had good luck with tapcons into brick. Anything into mortar will eventually fail.

If you pole mount from the ceiling you can run your cables through the pole.

That was my first thought too. The wood ceiling looks solid enough to support it. LINK

The pole mount would be a good option. Mount the bracket to a stud in the attic and cut a hole in the ceiling and drop the pole thru.
Nice clean install.

Brick. These days a 50" led TV is super lightweight. That's exactly what I have mounted.

Pole mounted is definitely an option. Wife just didn't like it.

Your wife not liking pole mounting is your problem, not mine.

Just a nice masonry bit will work. Into the brick. I drilled some half inch holes in solid cinder blocks and hung several hundred pounds of clothing and stacked storage boxes in my garage. The weight of a flat screen will be fine with a couple of expanding bolts. I think they're called anchor bolts. Mine had grooves around them and the bolt made I expand and bite into the concrete.

this is likely what i'm going to do. if i didn't have everything already wired behind the tv i'd consider the ceiling mount. looks like it will be a project for this weekend.

thanks for all the responses
