Posted by tduecen on 6/22/14 at 10:29 am01
Are these two Hall of Fame QB's?
Both quarterbacks have won 2 Super Bowls
They each have 3 seasons of 4k yards
Eli has 3 Pro Bowls to Big Ben's 2 and Eli has 2 Super Bowl MVP awards......
Big Ben has 32 game winning driving while Eli has 28
Eli 229 TD 171 INT
Ben 219 TD 122 INT
Ben 34,105 career yards
Eli 35,345 career yards
Eli ranks 48th in career passing rating
Ben ranks 9th in career passing rating

One likes to rape chicks, so I'd say no.

Both ultimately yes. Sad but true.

Man, I hope not. They are both in my top 5 least favorite QB list. I hate the fact that there are even conversations discussing Ben being a HOFer.

Eli will have the aggregate numbers and two of the most unlikely David and Goliath Super Bowl victories WHILE playing in New York.
Dude will get in.
Dude will get in.

Ben no. One of his sb wins was 110 percent in spite of him. He benefited from a defense that could truly step up in big moments.

As long as he plays another 4-5 years he'll have 50K passing yards, close to 350 TDs and an excellent career passing rating. Combine that with the super bowl wins and he'll be an easy induction unless some off the field issues keep him out.
Eli will be close to the same in career passing and TDs, but his passing rating will suck due to his poor TD/INT ratios. SO it'll depend on how much push he gets from being super bowl hero twice and playing in NY.

I really don't think either of them belong in the HoF. There has not been a point in their careers where either one of them could be considered elite. Eli has had some downright horrible years, even during what is supposed to be his prime.
Their super bowl wins were primarily accomplished by their defenses, especially considering the entire playoffs. Sure Eli made a couple of great plays, but the entire reason why they were even in that game was the defense and the pressure that the front 4 was able to put on the qb the entire playoffs and the super bowl.
There's this tendency to give qb's entirely too much credit/blame for the team accomplishment of winning super bowls. I don't agreee with it at all.

Over the last decade, have either of these guys been considered one of the top 3-5 QBs in the league? If so, for how long?

All of this.

Weird that they only have 5 Pro bowl appearances between them

Big Ben is a pretty good QB. He has probably been top 5 some seasons over his career. Tends to have an excellent YPA.

He's definitely been a pretty good qb. His career really isn't anything to sneer at. I just don't think that pretty good with several team accomplishments should be enough to get into the HoF.
Players like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees have always been a cut above him. At best he might have had a couple of years right at the 5th best in the league. I think that a player should have at least a couple of years (maybe more) in the elite group for his position to be considered for the HoF. That might not be how it works out, but that's how I think it should be.

Big Ben was the reason the Steelers were 8-8 last year and not 3-13.
That was a BAD football team.

And all 4 of these are pretty much sure fire HOF QBs (assuming Rodgers stays healthy anyway) and some of the best to ever play QB in the NFL. Not really fair to say he shouldn't be in the HOF because he's had the misfortune to be playing the same time as those 4 (and I don't necessarily disagree with anything you are saying overall). I think Ben is borderline HOF, but his overall numbers and the Super Bowl wins get him in by the time he's done.
But on the flip side, he's played in a pretty average offensive system and never really had the talent or system around him to shine. He's had a crap offensive line for most of his career and a nonexistent running game. He pretty much has been the entire offense for them for quite a while now.
