Albums that didn't get the respect they deserved at first.

I still cannot understand why people didn't "get" Relapse at the time. As time went on it has become highly regarded, but when it was released as Em's comeback album in 2009 everyone had mixed opinions on it, mostly due to the dialect. I personally think it is criminally underrated, with some of his better songs "Same Song and Dance", "Beautiful", "Deja Vu", "Stay Wide Awake" and of course "3AM".

Off the top of my head this is what I thought of. Any other albums from any genre that didn't get the reaction it should have AT FIRST?

Link? You have no idea what you are talking about.

Keith Richards on Exile
quote:

On the initial critical and commercial reaction, Richards said, "When [Exile] came out it didn't sell particularly well at the beginning, and it was also pretty much universally panned. But within a few years the people who had written the reviews saying it was a piece of crap were extolling it as the best frigging album in the world

The only reason it got mixed reviews is because it was a double album. It didn't take but 2-3 years for people to realize that it was a phenomenal album.

It couldn't have been too bad considering Tumbling Dice hit No. 1 during the release year.

Is that not the point of this thread?

I thought of it as more of a wider range. But maybe I am wrong

some history for you youngins,, but one of the most harshly panned albums on it's debut was non other than..

it was savaged by a number of Rolling Stone and other critics, but as per usual with Bowie, turned out to have some pretty decent music on it.

From the Rolling Stone review:

quote:

“Lacking any mentionable instrumental proficiency, [Eno] claims he ‘treats’ other musicians’ instruments — though the end product of his efforts would have to be classed as indiscernible… His record is annoying because it doesn’t do anything.”

not that I disagree, but in the early 70's it was at least slightly respectable.

Great album. But wrong thread.

quote:

Exile on Main St. was released in May 1972. It was an immediate commercial success, reaching No. 1 worldwide just as the band embarked on their celebrated 1972 American Tour.

So it was #1 before they went on worldwide tour...a hit out the box

It was a #1 album because it was the Rolling Stones at their peak. Of course people were going to buy it. Critically, however, the reception wasn't that positive. Hence, the already posted quotation from one Keith Richards:

Yes. I read Keef's book as well. Although a great read and I respect him tremendously, there was a lot of revisionist history involved.

Doesnt change the fact that it was the #1 album before they went on tour. Just bc Keef was pissed his favorite song was criticized by a famous journalist doesn't mean it belongs in this thread.
