By finishing 1st we would most likely play Russia or Korea, then play France, then play Brasil/Chile/Netherlands

Whereas finishing 2nd we would most likely play Belgium, then Argentina, then Chile/Netherlands

Sure you always want to win your group and the 2nd option looks more tough at first glance due to playing Belgium first instead of Korea/Russia, but Argentina has looked vulnerable and not that strong whereas France has looked great and seems the tougher out. So the only difference really is Belgium + Argentina or Korea/Russia + France. The jury is still out on Belgium as well.

I'd rather win the group, so I guess this isn't really a question just playing devils advocate. Might be a silly thread

A 1st place finish is far more of an advantage looking at it that way.

"2nd place is the first loser" - Ricky Bobby's daddy.

Or was it "if you're not first you're last"?

How about we beat Portugal first then worry about all this.

The first path gets us to the quarterfinals much more easily, but at this point I feel France is playing way better than Argentina.

Good point. This thread is a waste of time. We should be out practicing our finishing and passing instead of on TD talking about this silly "what if" stuff.

We're not on the team, so it's fine for us to talk about.

He then retracted those statements, admitting he was blackout drunk when he said them

I'll only look at this as far as the second round. Avoiding Belgium is crucial. We are better than every other team in that group.

My ranking of the teams had always been Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Ghana, the US, Russia, South Korea, and Algeria. I would love to be favorites for once.

Russia or Belgium aren't teams we pair up with well I think. Russia is a really organized team that we might struggle with. Belgium is loaded with talent. I'd much rather face Korea if they can somehow can get out of that group.

Hopefully Belgium looks average in their 2nd match. They weren't all that impressive in their first match, well at least not for 70 minutes or so. Their long ball/service up top to Fellani is what opened up the game for them.

Win the group, beat probably Russia or maybe South Korea, and then I attend the quarterfinals.

Now that Ghana has got a draw against Germany after losing to us our group can go back to being the Group Of Death.

I was worried for a minute.

Russia is really hot and cold.

Beat Portugal.

Then first. I want our team to win as many games as possible against as good of competition as possible. Finishing first meant we went undefeated in the group of death(with at least 2 wins). That would seem to be a pretty big jump for US soccer. Can only back in so far in a competition like this . Hell I'd rather us go toe to toe with a motivated Germany team and lose by a goal then back into the round of 16 and lose by multiple goals in that round if you told me now those were my hypothetical choices. Until you can look the big boys in the eye and go right at them I don't truly see any benefit to backing in for one extra game(I know that's not what the OP is saying). I just want to see us win as many games against great competition as we are capable of and keep moving forward on the world stage.

Would be quite a statement of how far we've come since the Group of Death in 2006 where we deflated and now talking about topping it in 2014.

You seem to be confused. We don't play on the soccer team. Our job is to make internet posts. The team is supposed to be practicing. So all is as it should be.
