Saw it last night. I had seen the live show twice before.
That movie was so slow. Good music obviously but the movie was over 2 hours it seemed
Don't know why Clint Eastwood should get praised for that. He literally took the scenes and even dialogue straight from the live musical
But despite being slow it was decent. Best part to me was Christopher Walken. I expected a Frankie Valli cameo but didn't see him

I really like Clint, but I will not be seeing this one.

The live show naturally had more energy and it definitely felt like a shot for shot remake but I still enjoyed it.

I feel like the majority of stage musicals that get brought to the silver screen have the life sucked out of them.
I've seen both Rent and Mama Mia live in NYC and the stage versions took giant shits on the paint by numbers Hollywood adaptations.
Maybe it's b/c seeing people sing it live adds that much. I don't know. There just aren't many musicals I've seen that can stand up next to the stage versions.

I just watched Rent last night on Netflix.
You can do corny things on stage that you can't do on film, like having a bunch of background dancers. For example, as hilarious as Book of Mormon is, I think it would translate to an AWFUL movie.
I thought Jersey Boys would translate better to film since half the songs are them singing like they were in a studio or at a concert. I haven't seen it to confirm it.
