Mac or Windows?

Handbrake works great. If on Windows, it requires either a decrypter, or the libdvdcss.dll file. For some reason on mine, the file only works on an older version of HB.

Makemkv is also an excellent ripper for lossless conversions or Bluray. I've tended to move toward Makemkv and then Handbrake for the mp4 file.

If using makemkv for DVD, no problem. If using Blu Ray then you likely need to go the makemkv forum and get the latest registration code. It's free while in beta.

Use VLC Media Player for playback. It's the best. Google it. Free download. Also, MKV files can be tricky for playback of embedded text, like, English subtitles when someone is speaking a different language. It works great with VLC but some media players, like WDTV, don't do well with these for subtitles.

I had some older DVDs. I inserted one in my desktop (Windows) and I have autorun turned off.

I then opened "My Computer" and right-clicked on the cd/dvd drive. I chose "explore". It listed every file on the disk. I copied them to a folder on my computer. Set the view to "details".

Several files are over 1gb. These are the movie broken into 3 or 4 sections. The last section will be smaller depending on the length of the movie.

Clicking on each one runs it. You will have to manually click on the next section.

There is no conversion needed! You just have to manually click on each section that you want to view.

Newer DVDs may have DRM (Digital Rights Management) that may protect the disk from being copied.......

Hope this helps and say "Hi" to my relatives in Mandeville!

P.S. I used a Windows XP pc to do the copying and playback. Newer computers are more sophisticated and may have the DRM.

I have a dvd player in the car that has not been reading discs lately. It has usb and sd slots on it, so I thought I would put them on a jump drive and see if they worked that way.

My son also has a little portable dvd player, rather than lugging discs around, I figured a drive would be better

I installed a media player in my car and a Wii. Kids can watch movies or play games. Works well.

I installed a power inverter, 15" drop down LCD monitor, DVD player, AV connector plate, sound sytem and AV plug plate. I have a Wii and WDTV media player connected to the DVD that has source select, plus I have the Signal pickup device installed for the Wii and headphone jacks, plus an amp and subwoofer installed.
