I'm changing the timing cover gasket on my sisters 2003 Ford Taurus. Just finished it today, took me 3 afternoons. I had to remove the alternator, power steering pump and bracket (leaking anyways so that was ok), idler pulley, tensioner, water pump (replaced it since it was off), and the crank just to get the timing cover off. Then I had to replace the oil pan gasket since it was stuck to the bottom of the TC. This job was a pain in the butt and has really got me rethinking/questioning my position as a Ford Man if this is the kind of design they are putting out.

Pulling the timing cover on pretty much any motor is gonna involve taking off a good bit of shite.

Vehicles aren't designed for you to work on them at home anymore, bring it to a pro

About $600-$700 to change the spark plugs on an expedition. If you can find a shop that wants to mess with it.

True. But there is not need for a water jacket to be behind the timing chain cover. They could have engineered it better.

Why would I do that? I have the same knowledge as a pro, and the same tools (own a crank removal tool now for $15 bucks)

My sister is dead. And there is no way I could have done that for my sister. She would have needed a new ride if I attempted that.

I'm sure there's a reason for it.

Not much is easy on new stuff man. Just be happy you didn't have to change the plugs.

That's cause ford saved money by using 2-3 threads in the spark plug hole. I had a coolant leak in the manifold gasket. Had to take everything off the engine. Took it to a shop and had them change the plugs since they were accessible. $1200 bucks. 5.4 triton fwiw.

Ford's crappy design/packaging has been going on for quite some time. Not to mention more than half of the parts are made in Mexico.

Had to change the evaporator on my 98 5.4 F150.

Remove seats, drop column, remove dash just to get at the part

They don't make them for you to work on, they make them for dealers to work on.

Damn. AC work is not something I am good at. My arse would have tried to cut a hole in the firewall. I removed the dash from my Mustang to change the heater core. Every damn thing in the dash was riveted to a 4" round solid bar in the dash (my guess is for safety reasons). I am near got a hernia trying to put it back in place.

And they're usually realllllll easy to work on IF you have the information you need from the factory.

Modern vehicles are very modular. Figuring out what needs to come off and what doesn't is a different matter if you don't have the manual from the manufacturer.
