When we look for life in the universe, what are we looking for?

What defines life in the universe? I know we all want to find intelligent life out there, but really, if we found microbes in an ocean under ice on Europa, those would be viewed as extraterrestrial life in our solar system.
So, with that standard, I am confounded at how it is debated on when "life" begins in the womb of a woman.
Truth is, in a universe of emptiness as far as we know right now (and I do believe there is not only intelligent life other than our own in the universe, but also an abundance of it), how careless are we in casting aside such a large portion of such a finite creature?
I'm lukewarm on the prospect of abortion because I will never know and don't really care for children born of a woman outside of my home, but the more I think about how precious the scarcity of life in the known universe is, it seems like an imperative to preserve ourselves.
ETA: and, yes, same shite, different angle.

I think finding microbes else where in the Solar System is inevitable, its just a question of when. The real question is whether or not they will be genetically related to us. My impression of the science is that it is tending towards yes.

You know what I meant. If it's not your kids, nieces, nephews, grand kids, best friends kids, etc., how much can only really care? There's only so much room in any one person's emotional "realm" for capacity to give a shite about some people.

Extraterrestrial bacteria would be an amazing find. A fertilized egg in a woman's body is viewed as something expendable...seems like we are confused about placing a value on certain forms of life.

I agree, but am going to play devil's advocate because I find the opposition's points fun...
The argument isn't so much "life" as it is "sentient life". Using "life" as a basis to stand against abortion would also mean we shouldn't cut down trees, kill mosquitoes nor eat... well... anything. Does that make any sense? Forcing someone to have a child they don't want only for it to die of starvation?? #thinkofthechildren
