Are there any places to drive up on the beach, surf fish, launch a yak, build a fire, drink beer, and camp like there is in texas on the way to Galveston.

Camped at GI and had a good time, partying and fishing.
This was in 1983, don't know now.

I thought beach camping was outlawed in GI years back?

Just google GI and see.
Like I said, I did it so long ago, I'm sure the rules have changed.

I thought they shut the gates at dark? You can stay?

Way to think outside the box, TW.
I might go down there next week.

You have to be off of Elmer's Island at sunset. You can camp at Grand Isle State Park on the eastern end of the Island.

We camped on Fourchon Beach a few years back. Holly beach and Rutherford Beach come to mind.

Grand Isle State Park
They closed beach camping for a few years after Katrina, but are open now.
Grand Isle State Park - Beach Tent Sites $14 per night
There are also "paddle-to" sites at Fausse Point State Park, but that isn't a beach.
If you look on the map of most Wildlife Management Areas, they also have primitive sites.

Not a drive up spot, but my brother and I (along with a few friends) would do over night canoe trips in Ouiska Chitto every year. Haven't done it in a long time. Work and kids kind of put a stop to that.
We used to use White Sands
