Researched the RAM on my laptop and I can upgrade to 8 megs. I says I have to change both sticks, but can I input two generic sticks or do I have to go with what the manufacturer recommends? Significant pricing difference.

You sure about that?

But yeah... I would use that scanner from Crucial and order from there.

I did that and their tool said I couldn't upgrade at all, when Gateway said I could. I just need to know if what should I look for in ordering RAM and if I can use any brand sticks?

(1) What is your hardware situation
(2) What is your software situation
(3) What did gateway recommend

You can use any brand, as long as it's the right type of memory.

Is your laptop from the early 90's?

Give me the model number of your laptop. I will serve as your RAM compatibility checker.

Crucial's memory compatibility tool is mostly to help find the right specifications (so noobs don't get DDR2 for a DDR3 system, or laptop memory for a desktop, or large capacity modules that the motherboard isn't rated for, or 2400MHz memory for an old intel chipset, etc), and the Crucial sticks come with the peace of mind that the RAM was tested and confirmed compatible. It does not mean RAM from another brand or manufacturer won't work. Same for any RAM you buy directly from Gateway, HP, Dell, etc. Their RAM is just as generic as generic RAM goes. There are only a handful of actual ODMs (original design manufacturer) of the hardware and far more brands that source from the same places.

If the Crucial site isn't offering any options, it's because they never bothered to test any of their modules with your particular model, or because they no longer manufacture modules with the proper specs for your machine.

And I'm assuming you mean 8GB. What does it currently have, and why do you think you need more?

Gateway
NV57H
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @2.30 GHz, 2.30 GHZ
RAM 4.00 GB (3.85 GB usable)
64-Bit

I am running Revit/Navisworks and it says optimum requirements would be 8 GB. Ever since I uploaded it, my system has been extremely slow.

There is room on my Hard Drive, just trying to make it work better.

Take your pick:

$66 and free shipping, but not amazon prime

$72.99 and Prime shipping

$72.99 and newegg

Are you saying that ever since you downloaded the program, windows has been slow even when the program isn't running? If so, RAM is not your problem. Yes, it will help with running the software, but if you're having slow-downs even when the program is closed, you have another problem.

What I meant to say was since I installed it. When it is running my computer is very slow and freezes or crashes.

I am running two virus protections and malware bites, so I don't think that is the issue.

I ran CC cleaner for registry issues.

It was working but slowly. Then the prof said we needed Revit 2013, 2014 was the only one I could install after several tries. I followed Autodesk's instructions for a clean uninstall/install and installed 2013, but have been having freezing issues ever since. Went through the FAQ's, and Autodesk Help, there were no issues that they could determine besides it would run better with 8 as compared to 4 gbs.

This is overkill.

Is that why you want to upgrade your RAM? (Upgrading RAM is never a bad idea, especially from 4GB to 8GB on a 64bit system), but I'm not convinced that is your issue here.

No. If you really don't trust your own browsing habits, just use a maximum of one. Uninstall both antivirus programs and use Microsoft Security Essentials. One antivirus is better than two. Immensely. And MSE is unintrusive and not much of a resource hog.

Have you ever taken a look at task manager while you're working? Just to see your system memory usage and CPU usage.

Depending on the complexity of the models you're working with, Revit isn't going to run well on a low-end machine. Upgrading the RAM may help, or it may not. Hell, it could be that your CPU is over-heating and throttling from excessive load if the heatsink is dusty, the fan is stuck/clogged/broken, etc.

Agreed..You're running essentially the bare minimum that Revit requires
