I've always wondered this. Down here, all of the uninhabited land is swamp... But what about places like in the screen shot below from google earth. You can see the developed land but what about all the desert? Is that area owned or regulated? Or you can just go ride/off-road/hike/camp/vision quest?

The undeveloped mountainous area looks like the maps they show of where the government lets the aliens live on the alien documentaries.

The Bureau of Land Management controls most of it. There are rules to its uses but it can be used in some public ways.

The federal government owns nearly all of it. The railroad companies own some. The area is highly regulated (see the Cliven Bundy debacle) and recreation activities are generally relegated to certain regions of national parks.

The BLM (backed by the Sierra Club) doesn't want motorized vehicles used on these lands for any purpose. Even lands designated for off highway vehicle use.

It's a constant battle to keep these lands open.

You can't sue the Federal government for anything really, aside from a few exceptions. Sovereign immunity is a motherfricker.

On top of that, if you manage to get yourself hurt or lost and need rescue you'll probably receive a bill for it.

Great question, I've wondered this myself. I think there's tons of land in Colorado, Utah, and Nevada that is free for backpacking, camping or whatever. Sounds like an awesome way to spend some time.
